You can spend a fair amount over $3300 on a nice walk behind Billy Goat. Buying and maintaining numerous gas guzzling small engines is expensive. Diesel and PTO is the way to go. Tractor on.

Pretty sure I could buy more than 10 brand new top of the line Billy Goats for what you've got tied up in Orange Crush

Not to mention a tractor cant go everywhere an atv can. Yep. And I already owned an atv before buying here. I think about all I've spent specifically for habitat/foodplotting since buying here 10 years ago is a used Billy Goat. $1500. I guess I did replace my atv sprayer - $175ish, and bought an orchard sprayer - $150ish. The stupid Ranger wasn't for habitat/foodplotting...that's for running around on dirt roads and going to bars Time and effort are what the highest "costs" were for me here. Once I need to replace my atv the $$$ costs will go up substantially I suppose.

The way this stuff has gone up in price.....is unreal. I figure I can drive this stuff around for many years.....then sell it and make a few bucks on it.....if I were to want to upgrade (which I dont). Good machinery and tractors are good investments. (My story and I'm sticking to it.)

If I had the kind of ground you have foggy, I'd likely have bought a tractor and a disk. My ground has never been tilled, at least not by any kind of machinery. I'd just as soon keep it that way for the time I'm around. The neighbor has some ground that a tractor and disk would be helpful for plotting. I don't see him investing in that kind of equipment, and I'm not going to buy it just to plot on his place.
Push comes to shove, I plot for fun and to keep does around so I can shoot bucks to put on the wall. If I can do that with a minimal investment, I'm pretty happy. The farmer on the other side of the road can grow beans and corn to feed the deer spring through fall. He does a much better job than I'd ever do.

We have a tractor and have gotten mostly out of plot work. The tractor is almost only used now for grading Dads driveway, tilling gardens around Dads house for friends, planting a little sweet corn, etc. Not to mention it doesnt have AC. The ATV is more fun to run anyway. Got into remote areas to explore for fun riding. It does the basics I want/need. Spraying, spreading seed, tilling up small remote plots, etc. ATV is perfect for my needs today and for the future.

Nowadays, when I hear about selling used equipment or vehicles and making a few bucks, I wonder if there was a real increase in value in our pocket or just a higher rate of inflation that our government hasn’t acknowledged. Either way, we buy this equipment or vehicle to use and enjoy. None of us will tow it behind the hearse.

Yeah....everyone has a different set of needs....no doubt. Originally I thought I could get along with just our wheelers and a drag, etc. But, In my case I had such heavy pine cover and stumps that I could not have food plots without getting some land opened up. I spent countless hours grinding stumps and getting some open ground for food plots.....which required tillage tools. I got allot of hard labor into this land and could not have gotten to where it is without the tractor. Now that the ground is "broken" and the new no till practices are real.....that is the direction I am going. So much easier and better way of doing things IMO. I am not selling my tillage implements - yet. But I have not used my tiller for two years and no disk use in a year now. I've also got an old filed cultivator and a nice 3 point cultipacker. I may sale them in a year or two.....but the minute you sell those things.....you will wish you didn't. Same goes for my stump grinder (I just noted about 1/2 dozen more stumps I should take out this summer......and could do a 20' x 100' food plot expansion if I get enough time on my hands. I'd make money....or at least get my money back on them if I sold them. At this point they dont owe me anything. Kinda like money in the bank. .

Mowed the trails that I can access with the rider today. Plan to hit the Billy Goat sections tomorrow, then stay the hell out of the woods until either I shoot a buck or firearm season is done. I am going to miss spending time out there.
Buckthorn "season" is only a few months away now...

I am going to miss spending time out there. Buckthorn "season" is only a few months away now... I have been staying out for 2-3 weeks. One time I drove outback to check the apple trees back there. I leave the pickup on and the radio blaring when I go there.
