I got sick of waiting and went ahead and planted my pumpkins today. Unless I water the hills, they probably won't pop until (if) it rains again. I did put a few hills in some heavier soil in another spot. There they will probably germinate without rain/watering. If I actually get a bunch of pumpkins this year, I'll be a bit surprised.
edit...oh yeah, I poured a good shot of milorganite on each hill. Figured the little bit of fertilizer couldn't hurt anything and the stink may keep the deer off for awhile.

Did you spray a circle around the planting area with round up or are you hand weeding them? i need to do that in a few random corners that could use some bonus deer food.

Last fall, I had pocket gophers in the foodplot where I planted most of the pumpkins. This spring, I raked up a bunch of the mounds (after I killed the gophers) into larger mounds. That's where I put the seeds. With the lack of rain this spring, nothing has germinated on those mounds yet. That's the only weed control I plan on doing in that location. I'll probably spray the vines (if they even germinate) with repellent a few times. The other spot I planted them was bare ground (old veggie garden site) so I just made some hills and planted them.

Deer didn’t touch our garden pumpkins last year. Not sure if my dad sprayed them or not. I’m planning on planting mine this weekend along with EW screen and a game bird mix. It’s warm enough and we’ve got moisture. Then I’ll be good til august.

But seriously though, do deer eat pumpkin vines? I guess when they are young and tender they might not be too bad.

The only part of a pumpkin deer ate at my old place were the young vines. I tried getting deer to eat the pumpkins themselves a number of times. Never happened. Even after I "accidentally" smashed some open. Figured I'd try pumpkins again for MN deer.

Man, they just gobble the shit out of the ones I have planted or dump behind the house after halloween. Atlantic giants were candy.

Deer here eat stuff they didn't at my old place, so pumpkins probably have a shot at getting eaten.

That is a common odd theme with lots of food.

Cant say I have ever had vines eaten. I am sure some have been nipped, but never a concern losing the vines.

A few years back, I had a deer eating the center out of a squash vine. I opened the window and pounded on the steel siding with my hand. She just looked at me and kept chewing.
My neighbor usually has a pumpkin patch for grade school kids to come out. I see lots of pumpkins laying there all fall, but have never walked over to see if they nibble on the pumpkins. It doesn’t seem like they get much use.

I have to admit that one big reason I'm growing pumpkins this year is for our granddaughter It'll be cool to see her with a bunch of pumpkins (and apples) Back in 1971 as a little kid I worked for a specialty crop farmer in Brooklyn Park MN that grew everything from flowers to squash and pumpkins. When we harvested the squash and pumpkins the guy left thousands of odd balls laying in the field in the fall. Soon as it started freezing the deer poured into that field for those things. Looked like one of the best food plots I ever seen. You may have to protect yours. Just sayin.
