Alright, just trying to prep for this fall and wanted to get some insight from you guys.
With the looming sale of my grandma's place, I'm trying to figure out the best course for getting most of my trees relocated. Should I be doing anything to the trees right now to get them prepped? Art, I believe I remember reading something you posted one time about going around the trees before hand and cutting the roots in order to give them time to put out some small feeder roots? I will be leaving 4-5 of the "bigger" trees as I don't want to have to bring a tree spade in.
Once I get them transplanted, should I cut them back right away or just wait until next spring? This is going to be a lot of work, and I might just try to have a convo with the buyer about buying the majority of the trees already established for a very fair price.

I have read about that and it seems like I tried it on a few spruce.
It seems like you are on light soil, if we don’t get rain, will you get much root growth?

Are you moving them to heavy or light soil?

I'd move a few of your favorites and leave the rest.

A agree with stu. I transplanted a 4 year old apple tree that was struggling in a bad location.
I dug it up in the dormant season and cut the trunk off to balance off to balance with the fewer roots. It grew and is doing well, but 2 years later it is the same size as new trees I planted that same spring.
if you have some real young trees that would be easier, but you still likely wouldn't be much farther ahead versus planting a new tree.

I would just ask if you can gather scion and move on. Will you have to move these trees now and again later?

You (smallchunk) got scions from some source(s) previously. You've learned about possession being 9/10 of the law. You're young. You have access to a good number of folks who will happily provide you with scions again.
At some point, it becomes about lessons learned/lessons taught

I deserted all my apple trees like George Floyd left his kids. Walked away and never looked back.
Someday they make make a monument of me.

Your young, and will probably move again. Take it as you had a lot of fun doing it along the way and leave them or buy the place.

I hope those trees are still there, but who knows. Plant stuff somewhere that you don't control possession and deal with the inevitable.

Don't know if i would want to risk transplant shock and have the tree die anyways, or worse, look like my cat if it did survive....

Quite admirable ....I agree.
