Added bonus, that water hole never goes dry. It is 2-3’ deep. I have no lack of water but it will be neat to have a plot with a water hole. Is there a benefit to look at prevailing winds and where to position the foodplot in relationship to the waterhole? Keeping the waterhole on one side or adjacent to a row of conifers as a travel lane after leaf fall could make a big difference. Even a few scattered conifers can determine travel. Maybe keep the waterhole just inside the woods and put the foodplot adjacent to it? Warm evenings or during the rut a buck might visit the waterhole during the day. Just food for thought. Here is the lay out. Yellow are current plots. Red is going to be new plot. The hemlock stand widens and runs for 3/4 of a mile to the NW. Dashed line is current deer movement when they are coming out of hemlocks. This year my 3 does never left the thick pines other than to eat in the field and plots. My plan after the plot is to get defined deer trails out to the main plot. Wind is brutal here never blows same way for more than 30 minutes. I would like to get an inclosed blind up at some point.

I just took a walk and found that my one and only swamp white oak is also holding leaves.

Started the clearing process today. Spent four hours cutting and moving. I am going all the way to the spruce.

Looking good Chummer. Are those trees with leaves beech? If they are you will want to spray them because they’ll root sprout heavily.

I should have a nice screen around the outside as most of the understory here is beech. I only noticed one large beech on the edge I left sanding. Hopefully these smaller ones don’t root sprout but if they do the will get the gly treatment.

Slow and steady. Spent another half day cutting. I decided to work smarter not harder. Neighbor has been splitting and hauling the firewood away during the week. He is excited, he thinks he will have enough for next winter when we are done. Win for him and me. That's a pretty good deal when you can get someone else to do the work.

That’s coming along nicely Chummer. Will you be back at it next weekend?

That’s coming along nicely Chummer. Will you be back at it next weekend? That is the plan. As of now my daughter wants to go up Friday night so we can turkey hunt sat morning. After the hunt she will want to ride the ranger so I can get a few hours in working. I wouldn't be surprised if my neighbor has it mostly cleared this week. It has been thinned enough that the trees remaining are easily accessible. Still another handful that need to be dropped. I want to burn the ground clutter and lime, looking at an August planting.
