Something I have always intended to do with the smaller seeds like brassica......where it's important to get the rates right......is to mix in some kittly litter as a way to get a good seed distribution and not get the seed too thick. I have gotten much better at seeding at proper rates......the the kitty litter may provide some forgiveness from applying too heavy. With my Herd seeder now mounted on the front of my UTV......and getting the seed drop rates about cut in half with a small seed plate......I can now just drive around to seed my plots with brassica. The Kitty little may make a bit more driving and still better rate control. I wish I could think of something inert that was finer yet. Used kitty litter would provide the nitrogen...

Got my bag of collards today. I'm glad I went down to the shed and checked my seed supply...had a 5 lb. bag of chicory that I had forgotten about. Almost ordered a bag before I went to check.

Are those collards anything like what people eat?

Yep. The last time I grew some we ate a bunch. Cook’em like spinach or eat as salad? We cooked them. They take quite a bit longer than spinach, and you need to trim the large central vein out of the leaves. With some bacon, onions, and garlic...they are quite tasty. We did give a bunch to our inlaws. She's kind of a health freak, they ate theirs raw.

Talk in’ bout health foods, my bro in law brought some wild rice soup on a hunting trip. Sounds healthy. He told me he put 3 pounds of bacon in that kettle.
That stuff would keep you goin’ all day. Take this last statement anyway you want and you will be correct.
This discussion puts an all new light on a food p(l)ot thread.

Woke up to a nice hard frost this morning, so I went ahead and broadcast white clover, vernal alfalfa, NZ clover, chicory, and a bit of forage collard seed on the houseplot. I still plan on planting a few gopher mounds to pumpkins on that plot too, but I'll be curious to see what (if anything) the collards do. I tried spreading brassica seed and mowing low on that plot before a hard rain last summer and got zero brassica germination.

Got my Forage Collard seed but it won't be until end of May before they get planted. Going to fertilize and till or disc, then use my Van brunt drill to plant. It will be interesting to see how a straight planting does compared to you guys that are frost seeding with a mix.
