I have shoved some in the ground and they grew. Best results is to dip in rooting powder, shove thru a weed mat or cardboard and cage. Some of my cages are 3 ft. They give a little protection.

I haven’t used rooting powder yet, but usually cut them at an angle or shave off the bark at the bottom inch or so and then shove them into the ground 6-9”. Using mats and cages is the best yield but I have also fired for effect in area and hope 30-50% make it through. The ones in the picture above I dug out with roots from around my house and moved them north.

I rolled out to look at my ROD cuttings today. These were just hastily snipped from dormant shrubs before anything leafed out and shoved into the ground. I used rebar to drive a pilot hole about 2 - 2.5’ deep then shoved them in the ground and walked away. I didn’t use rooting compound or cage or use anything for a mat. All the established ROD is leafing out on the farm. If I had to guess, I’d say about 1/3 of the cuttings are starting to leaf out today. I hope they make it. 33% survival would make me happy. If you squint hard enough you can see the green on these cuttings.

Earlier this spring I’d thought these bush were ROD but, now the red has faded to brown and they have blossoms that are looking like blueberry blossoms. I know they aren’t blueberries. Thoughts??

Thoughts?? both my apps say blueberries. How do you know they aren’t that? They definitely look like young high bush blueberries now but, this location is beside the road. The property owners definitely would not have planted them. The prev owner was 105 when he passed. The newer owners haven’t done a thing to the property. There’s wild low blueberries further up the road. They are 1/5 the size of these and I’ve never seen a crop like these. If I remember correctly late this winter those stems were red. Now they’ve changed colors. I will know in a June/July when the berries form what they are.

Those blossoms sure like the blossoms on my high bush blueberries. Some of the canes do get a reddish hue in the winter. Certainly not the bright red of ROD though.

If it’s high bush then the seeds must’ve come from my blueberries at home (150 yards away) and the birds shit them out. The kicker is they’re bigger than mine at home.

They’ll end up on the new land if I can get it logged and fields made. I’ve got to try propagating them. They could be a good side business for extra cash.

Was clearing out some trails today and came across a native ROD buried in a Hazelwood shrub. 6’ tall. Score

Good stuff buried behind more good stuff. I have a lot of buckthorn and bush honeysuckle here, so it is rare to find a few good shrubs together. I’m jealous.

I brought another round of root balled transplants up with me yesterday. I wish I went this route sooner. Survival seems to be close to 100% on these on the ones I brought up earlier. This is cuttings on steroids. I planted this one in April in a pile of brush I had knocked down.

I found another smaller bush about 20’ down the other side of the stonewall. This is under a powerline so the birds must’ve shit the seeds out and they grew better then my bushes. The issue now is whoever wants to eat them will be walking into poison ivy.
