"Cluster Planting is Effective and Affordable A 100-foot roll of 6-foot high welded wire fencing and 8 steel t-posts creates a single circle with a 32-foot diameter that provides affordable browse protection for up to 20 trees. Trees planted using this technique are closely spaced about 6 feet apart allowing for some mortality to occur without diminishing the long-term value of the cluster orchard. Several cluster plantings strategically placed on your property encourage wildlife to travel between them increasing wildlife viewing opportunities and hunter success." n40wildapples.com/index.php?page=3I'm thinking about this for the 6 seedlings I ordered from SLN. I've got 3 wild apple and 3 common pear. I could order a couple more. Talk me out of it.

Talk me out of it. a 50' roll could give you 6 cages nearly 3' in diameter, and then you could use smaller/cheaper 3' rebar step in posts, and place them where you want them. For big enclosures, I've been eyeballing this stuff. It's extremely light and seems like it'd be easier to hold up, take back down later, and move. www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tenax-deer-fence-177-in-x-197-in-mesh-100-ft-length-1a100140It's been on my wish list for a while to try a mega super duper dogwood cuttings cage where I'd do something similar to your 100' diameter enclosure, but make my own posts outta 3" ash trees and anchor the corners (to avoid sag) with a gizmo my corner anchoring guy told me about.

All those lower branches would get browsed off anyway, so I'd just plan to use a smaller cage and prune those off each year and force them things up above the browse line.

I doubt I'd do a full 100' roll enclosure. But, the idea of putting the 6 cheap seedlings closer together, and using one fence around them all, is appealing. Maintaining the trees would be less work if I didn't have a cage on each tree. I could just make it so I have a "gate" section of the cage and go in and take care of them all rather than one at a time.

But, come to think of it, I do have 6 cages ready to roll already from the 6 trees I killed. They're just sitting there rusting along the edge of the plot. I should probably just use them....

For those interested, stop by and I can show you two exclosures each from a 150 foot roll of cement wire and also several smaller exclosures.
They have been in place for 10 or 15 years.

I think guys go over board with the size of their cages. 3’ diameter on a 5-6’ cage is plenty. I don’t care if anything below that gets browsed and I have never had a deer reach over to get the central leader. The beauty of an enclosure is if you want a thicket or ease of maintenance. I wouldn’t do it for 6 trees. Use the cages you have or order another 30 trees

Plant your pears on the north and crabs on the south side to take advantage of the vertical and fast growth of pears? That way they don't shade the apples. Space the pears closer together so you have more space for crab crowns?
Aside from a bear possibly pushing through would a deer not just the fence to get in? I know a lot of people in cattle country put feeders in 30ft enclosures. Deer don't mind one bit.
