What is the best way to set back the height of hazelnut shrubs? Do top work then down to the desirable height or is best to flush cut them at ground level right now and let them resprout from the ground? I want to keep them as shrubs, but I’ve got spots where they are getting much taller than browse line.

I seldom see them get that tall. Usually they start to bend over.

I have mowed them before and they resprout but, I think you could also prune they to a lower branch just above a bud.

Are the tall hazelnuts in partial shade so they are growing tall reaching for the sun? They can get pretty tall in those cases.
As the shrub clump expands the outer branches spread more horizontally to reach for the sun and those branches are typically in the browse zone. Even the tall center clumps can occasionally be pushed down with some heavy, wet snow which is a good time for some new browse to drop into the browsing zone. You could brush hot the tall ones and they would sprout back.

The deer browse them a little on my places, but not enough to stunt the growth too much. They seem to like the pollen sacks though because those seem to get eaten by something.

I love my Hazel. I got them the last year SNL was under old management. I don’t remember the name but they have grown nice. I have never seen them browsed. Last year they were loaded with nuts then poof, all gone. When I was a kid my grandparents had a hedge row of them. Gramps would mow them every few years and they would grow back up. Last I remember seeing them they were 15’ tall.

Are we all talking about American hazelnut? I don't have any beaked hazelnuts so I don't know much about them. I have never seen an Am. hazelnut any taller than 8-9'

They were the hedge row between the lawn and the pasture. I remember trying to ambush squirrels and chipmunks. They had a long distance between them and the woods to cover. Good times.

So they grow fairly dense??? I am always interested in shrubs that I don't currently have...and especially those that provide some sort of food for the critters. What sort of soils do they like and do they tolerate wet feet? This has sparked my interest in maybe finding some.....

I have never planted any. They are just ‘there’.

I've got Am. hazels all over. Light, upland soils and heavier, damper soils. I do NOT have any on soils that are wet year round.

They are great shrubs and provide good cover as well as food when the nuts drop. They tend to grow in small clumps and expand over time into larger clumps.
They don't tolerate really wet ground - when the beavers flooded a section of my land the american hazelnut died after having wet feet for a couple months.

Then reach for the sun and then bend over. Like Chummer said, the nuts are there one day and gone the next. It happens every year on my place.
