I might plant a screen of 2-3 foot Norway or Ponderosa Pines and cage all of them . ...20 ? Small area
My observation is they shoot up fast if protected.
Next year !

I’m not sure I’ve planted Austrian Pine? Is there an advantage over the others ? I’d guess it’s a cold tolerant pine?

When they are young, it's pretty tough to tell them apart. As they age, the Austrians will be fuller and darker green than Reds. Austrians won't get as tall and straight as Reds at maturity either.

I’m going to try some Scotch Pine in Iowa. I bought 4 foot x 100 foot cage . … how many trees will that protect . I don’t want to overdo it, just a nice tight cage to protect? I know I need another roll or two ..

What’s the best pine for a Christmas tree? You don't see many pines at Christmas tree lots any more. Mainly firs and spruce. Scotch (Scots) pine used to be popular for Christmas trees, but you have to be careful with what strain you plant. Some get really yellow in the winter. I would imagine if you planted most any pine and sheared it annually to thicken it up you could have a reasonably decent Christmas tree.

I’ve seen a few on my property that would look good! Might add a few more and cage then until they get cutting size … probably Scotch Pine. Never thought of Black Hills as a Christmas tree option .

We walked the property the other day and the forester found one red pine. It was huge. Straight as an arrow with no lower branches to be seen. It was surrounded by white pine so I wonder where that one seed came from. In talking to the forester he really made his point to match what grows well on your property’s soils. Don’t fight it. You’ll rarely win. That said, he was sort of dumbfounded why those white pine grew so well on the property soils. They must’ve been the first trees to get a foothold when it switched from open fields back to early succession.

Can’t get much prettier than a tall Red Pine or White Pine with some snow on it ! They can get pretty ugly here with freezing rain and heavy snow loads breaking off limbs as big as your thigh.
