Since its almost a certainty I'm getting my new place (closed on my old one and will be closing on the new one Friday) i'll be needing a lawn mower. What do you guys like better for mowing a huge yard? a zero turn or riding mower? Mostly flat with some banks on the driveway.

Having had both, I prefer the zero turn that I have now because of the ease of going around trees, sheds, etc. Large open space I'd go with the rider, COST being the main factor. To me it seems the ZTR's are over priced.

That's way too slow and unwieldy.

The right riding lawn mower can be productive in winter for a lot of people. However, if you have that end of things covered get a zero turn

My mowing time went from 3hrs to 1hr when I bought my zero turn. Not apples to apples as the zero turn has a much bigger deck. Still, it mows faster. Easy to mount a sprayer to but not great at hillsides or tall vegetation (I have done some pasture work with it). The ability to never mow over the same spot twice is awesome. I'm the kind of guy that likes the chain to be in wood, the blades to be cutting, etc. My riding mower spent a lot of time turning over already mowed grass. I do have a lot of obstacles to mow around though.

I have a Kubota that mows the yard and can pull an ATV disk for plotting. I have also raised the deck and mowed down rye plots that are chest high.
I like the dual purpose machine.

I pull a spreader with my zero, wouldn't hook a disk up to it if you paid me. I don't trust that the hydrostatics would handle it. I would buy a little 9n for stuff like that before beating up my zero turn.

I have a John Deere model 740 diesel lawn tractor that my wife mostly uses. I can get a good size tiller on the back to work off a PTO. In the future when I am retired I could buy my wife a zero turn for mowing, pull the deck off this unit and put a tiller on it and use it for woods plots.

My wife had a ZTR at her old place. I really didn't like that mower. It certainly mowed quickly and was maneuverable, but it had very poor traction. Even small hills were challenging. Maybe it was just that mower (Cub Cadet) and others don't have that problem. I mow with a cheap Cub riding mower. If you're retired, time is less of a factor anyway Wade

I don't mind mowing that much, but I don't want to spend 8 hours mowing every 5 days for a few months a year.

Plant apple trees instead? I'd still be mowing around/under apple trees. Evergreens planted on 6-8' centers will take over an area and eliminate the need for mowing.
