my "hunters" bring home, squirrels, rabbits, coons, moles, skunks, groundhogs, cats, deer legs.... They don't like guns...the one hides as soon as I pick up the gun. The others are fine, until the first bang....then "poof" they gone! They are however protective of the house and the kids. They do like to hog the bed or couch when given the chance as well.... They also like to go for truck rides to town to the local farm retail store as well.

We have two dogs (mutts), guess who picks up their crap in the back yard the majority of the time.
I heard them talking about another puppy, I said fuck no.
I like dogs, just wish someone besides me would clean up after them without having to be hounded....
See what I did there

(see what I did there?) My boys don't eat until the dog eats. Maybe your kids don't get to use the restroom until the dog's poo is picked up? Jbird - I just lost a dog that cumulated 10+ years of not hunting or retrieving. I really don't want to wait another 10+ years for a dog to hunt with. I'm fine with a mutt of certain caliber, but don't want "just any dog". The wife is big on the rescue idea though. I really wish those Griffon's chummer posted weren't so hard to find or so damn expensive.

If you want a hunting dog, make sure whatever dog you select comes from hunting lines if possible. Both labs and golden retrievers have some watered down lines from breeding for looks versus hunting abilities. Many breeders pump out as many purebreds as possible without regard to selection for favorable hunting traits. I'm assuming that is the case for other dog breeds as well. That's not to say you couldn't train a random lab or golden retriever to hunt well, just that you have a higher chance of ending up with a good hunter if that dog was the result of generations of breeding specifically for hunting ability as opposed to looks. We bought our golden retriever about 5 years ago and at that time the starting price for a dog from hunting lines was around $1000. My buddy just ordered a lab pup and the price was $1500.
If you want your best chance at a good hunting dog, I'd pass on the rescue dog option.

www.kyloekennels.com/This is the breeder we used. They are great people and raise the litters in their house. They have some certified for hunting. Not sure how that works but I think they offer it. They also work with the puppies and pick one with the traits you are looking for. I told her I wasn’t going to have them certified to hunt so I probably got the dummies. I asked for the ones that would be best with the kids. Our first one is on the small side at 42 lbs. The second one I was worried she would get bullied because we were getting a male. I asked for the runt. We got a 75 lb fatso. I know they ship these all over the country. The price sucks but the way I look at is they really are family members and they don’t shed. Most dogs that don’t shed are over 1k.

I feel this way when buying a truck; I research and lust for the 5yr old Raptor, then buy the 15yr old Toyota. Took the youngest boy to the local humane society today. Wasn't really a positive experience for either of us. Mostly Rott and Pit mixes that looked neglected. Loud and aggressive.

A truck doesn’t meet you at the door everyday with a hug. A truck doesn’t know when you have had a bad day. These dogs have kept us all sane during COVID. I am drinking so it is all good. Tomorrow when I am shoveling a month of shit in the rain I may sing a different tune.
