BHS has been one of my favorites. They do pretty well overall in both Pope and Otter Tail Counties. Not the fastest growing Spruce, but they seem to really pop in year 5-10. Black Hills Spruce also seems to survive in CRP/natives without getting shaded out.

Black Hills Spruce also seems to survive in CRP/natives without getting shaded out. BHS were the first trees I ever planted for wildlife. I planted them on shit scorch clay (hilltop) in farm country. I let them go for a couple years without much help other than some wood chips. I came back and sprayed out the grass and then put mats on them. They took off like a rocket after that competition was dealt with.

It seems to get worse every year. I’m not getting the greatest survival on spruce or pine in the last 3 years...My best overall survival is Black Hills Spruce. We have to cage all pine. The only "Black Hills spruce" I have here are actually blue spruce. I ordered a couple hundred BHS from NCR a number of years ago, they grew so slowwwwwlllllyyyy I was wondering what the heck the deal was. It takes a few years for blue spruces to develop the blue color....that's what they are. That explains their slow growth pattern. At some point, they should be pretty for a few years until the needle cast fungus hits them. Well that’s a bummer Stu. Did you contact them or are they the ones that went out of business?

They went out of business. Some guy in southern MN bought them out, but I don't think he had a clue. I don't think he's in business any more.

I went to grab my 8’ apple ladder on Saturday. It was under the camp deck. There were at least 2 12” balsams growing in the sand under there. It gets partial sunlight from the north end of the deck.

I couldn’t find my road spruce thread, so I’ll put it here. The white spruce I pulled from the ditch this spring made it thru the dry spell. I’m guessing they’ll need more to make before winter to go into it healthy.
