A question for you Minnesota guys We have a group of 8 guys that had a houseboat fishing trip scheduled for last year to Lake of the Woods that got canceled last year due to Covid. We pushed the reservation to this year and it is not looking good for our Mid June reservation. The guy is willing to refund our deposit if we want to cancel. We are going to wait about a month to see if the Border opens up, not holding our breath. The question I have is there any place in Northern Minnesota that would give a guy sort of a Canadian fishing trip experience ?

Take a look at the Minnesota side of Rainy Lake and see if you can still get a house boat rental or all filled up. Kabetogama and Vermillion are the other big lakes. Vermillion gets lots of Muskie fisherman from what I hear.

Still, it feels like a great place - the last time I was there (many moons ago).

Vermillion. Fish for smallmouth. Also, keep a couple to eat, they are delicious. Don’t let the weirdos tell you it’s a sin to eat one.

Smallmouth taste different than largemouth or black bass? I'm always jealous of the walleye pics you guys post. Truly beautiful fish compared to what we grow down here.

I haven’t eaten a largemouth or a rock bass. I ate a couple smallies out of Vermilion though. I thought the meat was very good. The lake is cold and clear. The meat was just a nice white fish with a medium texture. It too flakey, not too firm.

I’ve been to lake vermillion each of the last 3 years. Last 2 years have been a huge bust. Last year was really bad... I think it got hammered all season long from the border being closed. We don’t fish for 2 hours and be done either. We fish 6-8 hours for 3-4 days straight so we give it a good shot

You will cross some big water but once you get back into the islands you are protected and can fish allot of structure. There will be allot of pressure when you are close to the access points so getting away from the masses is a good idea. When you return you will find all the campsites full near the access point so if you think you can spend the last night near the access point you probably can't. We tried this and had to take the last/worst site available. It was wide open on a big rock slope and the wind made it difficult to not have your boat pounded. I did not get much sleep that night. And always, rain gear and mosquito spray.

It could get rough.

I doubt you can find a open houseboat rental on this side of the border for then. The only way is if someone just cancelled.
