I've got a tomcat around here and have been trying to get rid of it. He hasn't given me a shot with the .22 yet, so I figured I'd try to catch him in the livetrap. As I set it last night, I just knew I'd wake up to a skunk in the trap. Yep...that's what happened. At least I had set the trap 20 yards from the house instead of right in front of my garage door like I was going to do. I figured the best way to deal with the SOB was to shoot him right between the eyes. He gave me a perfect shot, looking right at me and I drilled him square between the eyes. He didn't spray, but he did start "leaking". At least I got him away from the house before most of the stench leaked out.
Anybody ever find a "sure fire" no stink, way to deal with a skunk in a trap?

My old man built a wooden box designed to fit directly over the trap. Had a hole cut into it with a flexible pipe to his car exhaust. Sort of a lot of fucking around though.

So he'd sneak up and put the box over the live trap?

cheap blue tarp over trap, take old vacuum cleaner hose stick under tarp and hook up to ATV or truck. 15 to 20minutes and the skunk is dead. No smell.

If you talk in a low calm voice when approaching trap the skunk won't spray.

I believe I'll leave those ^^^ techniques to braver men than I
edit...I still find it a bit hard to believe that a dead skunk won't "leak" out the stink. The one I shot didn't spray. It was instantly dead. Dead things lose bodily fluids when muscles relax. I got it away from the house right away, but there is a "trail" of skunk essence drops where it leaked as I moved it.

I've found that a shotgun shot keeps them from spraying more often than not.
Personally I think you should just pick up the cage and sink it into a pond for a few minutes.

I’d go with Tom’s instructions or what I’ve seen done is put your trap on a small plywood sheet or wide boards. When you catch him move up slowly and put an old blanket over him. Then get two other guys to grab each end of the plywood/boards and put it in their truck. Take it to a pond to toss it in or have them shoot it someplace else. I do think they’ll spray when they hit the water though.

I would find a way to form an alliance with the cat. You have common ground after all.

20G sabot slug from 50 yards. At ~$3 a shot, it only cost me 15 bucks.

I've shot way too many skunks in live traps and when they die the stink leaks out. And sometimes it sprays out.
What I do to minimize the stench is to dig a skunk grave just upwind of the trap. I put the .22 bullet through the brain and immediately dump the skunk in the grave and kick dirt on top. Often times you have a few seconds to work before the smell gets really bad.
Later in the summer you will have the best looking grass in your whole property growing on top of the skunk grave. Maybe you could add a couple pumpkin seeds on top of the grave to see if they will suck up the dead skunk juices.

One spring I killed several skunks near my barn driveway where the soil is basically beach sand. The grass there dies after a few days without rain, so I rarely have to mow there. The summer I buried skunks there most of the grass was 4" tall, dead and brown like always but the skunk grave grass was a foot tall and the darkest green I've seen. Skunks are not fun to deal with, but they make excellent fertilizer.
