I’ll probably talk Mrs Kooch into a dog when we finally move out here.
50% pheasant in cattail sloughs 45% pheasant in open country 5% ducks (I really don’t see myself wanting to be cold wet and miserable hunting birds as I age. Plus, too much work. Maybe some jump shooting. )
100% solid inside the house dog.
Lab is the lazy choice. I’m also thinking springer, English setter, French Spaniel, Brittany.
I think a close working flusher with a strong desire to retrieve vs a pointer.
Which breed?
I already have names.
“Willy Nelson” for a male “Girlfriend “ for a female

Chummer has me sold on the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, but they are rare here (and cost a small fortune).

Pheasants is their speciality.

I took my youngest to camp yesterday and I bet he covered 10 miles. He had a blast pointing the flock of robins that were in the field. He would stalk them until they flew then he would start all over again. Mrs. Kooch will love this breed. They are very alert and protective of the house although they attack with kisses when ever anyone comes over. They do enjoy scaring the fed ex guy back to his truck after he rings the bell. They don't know that he wasn't planning on coming inside. Llya sleeps in our bed and Gronk mostly sleeps with our 11 yo. Great all around dogs and they don't shed.

Another thing in their favor for cost of ownership is there are no know chronic conditions in the breed. No hip problems which is big for a hunting dog.

My son in law has some field champion Golden Retrievers. He trials and hunts all over the country. His dogs are tops. I never thought much of the Goldens until I saw what he was doing with the dogs he has. Great pheasant dogs.....but I could not own one.....as you need to cut the burrs from them, etc. He recently had his dog bred.....got like 8 puppies.....and they sold for over $2000 a puppy. Alll were sold before they were born.
It takes a certain personality to get along with spaniels......I'm not made for them. I owned a great lab.....but most are better at ducks than pheasants.....IMO. I've seen a few good wire hairs......but they can be strange dogs for kids and families. German shorthairs with good breeding seem like a good choice.

Nobody here thinks “Willie Nelson” is a great dog name? Or Reba? Jolene?
I guess I’m the only one that has to like it if it’s my dog.

Check out Small Münsterländers as another non-lab recommendation. Hard hunters and great house dogs. I haven’t had one myself, but have heard good things.
