How many Sandhill Cranes does it take to demolish a food plot? Should I worry that I've got Cranes wandering around my newly opened food plot? How many Cranes does it take to peck four bags of buckwheat?
Two? Twenty?

Add it to the list of stupid shit this state does.

I had a pile of them in my plot one morning last weekend, then just two the second. I make an effort to just leave my phone in camp when I take my solitary morning strolls. I figure Mrs Kooch needs some privacy every day when we're up there so I get up early and slip out for a walk. I don't know whether she uses the private time to do, whatever.... but anyway. When I get back I boil water and make her cocoa.
The ruckus the flock made (is that what a bunch of Cranes is called? A flock?) was unreal. I think there were a dozen. The second day, there were just two out in the middle when I snuck out there. When they finally decided they'd had enough of me and took off, the two that were there made that noise, then I heard the rest reply off in the distance to the North somewhere. It was cool. They looked like Emus wandering around out there. Loud sons of bitches.
Edit - Regarding the phone comment, I meant to put a sentence there alluding to the lack of photos. That's why no pictures. I'm trying to just disconnect from the phone more.

I have a pair that nest on my property. 2 won't do any damage.

I'm worried about the rest of them coming back. They sure are cool looking birds.

I was told that the large groups you see outside of migration are yearlings.
I know several people who say they taste great.

I have also heard that those groups of yearlings will move if ‘harassed’.

I know we get one shoot at geese before they find a new field. I’d think cranes would move on with a little harassment

A lot of farmers hate them because they go down corn rows and pull up the newly planted corn. They do get shot in MN, just not legally. I'd say they probably put a hurt on your field.

It is amazing to me how they find the food plots after they have been seeded like that. Next day they will be on my camera after not being there the month before. Just a single pair of cranes can put a hurting on a small area. They eat a lot.
