Ohio and WV youth season opens tomorrow! Taking my daughter to the old old family property in WV tomorrow morning. Calling for a low of 37 but skies are clear and the high will be 59.
Good to be back in the kid guiding business.

I’m headed out in the morning with my daughter as well for the first sit of the year. Good luck to ya! Don’t think I’m going to have enough hands for my bow with all the crap I have to bring.

My wife’s nephew may come over and hunt. We hear a few gobbles per day between my place and the neighbors.

Go get them Art!! I don’t plan on hunting them. I may go out for a couple days. That way they’ll disappear from my property like the deer do when I’m hunting them. I just had a hen walk up to the deck on the camp. She’s been here the last 3 springs but, I’ve never seen a baby chick with her. I wonder how their nesting is going with 6” of wet snow? Do they abandon them or stay on them? She obviously isn’t.

Late start this morning, gobbling like crazy walking down driveway. Couldn’t make it to blind as they must have been roosted close to blind. Spotted turkeys walking. Didn’t have decoys as they were in the blind. Played with one Tom for an hour but wouldn’t commit without decoys. I did have a turkey fan with which is the only reason he probably gave us a look. He had a bunch of hens in the woods. Didn’t want to get too aggressive being our first morning out.

My buddy has a Tom 100 yards away spinning in circles and it won’t come in yet. Been doing it for 20 min. Lol

We parked and my daughter heard birds on neighboring property before we had our gear. Walked 150 yards and one gobbled above the car. Didn’t think he would be dumb enough so we kept going. Heard nonstop gobbling from the car and neighbor land for an hour.
We couldn’t get any other birds going. When we got with in sight of the car I could see turkeys fighting on the neighboring property. Quick set up with no decoy and a few calls. Long beard and 4 Jake’s came on a rope. At 40 yards my daughter looked at me to see if they were in range. Turning her heard spooked them all enough that they made a 90 degree turn and faded away.

Darn things will walk by me during deer hunting in blaze orange. You can talk to them and just dumb.
Spring sure does something to their awareness.

My buddy has a Tom 100 yards away spinning in circles and it won’t come in yet. Been doing it for 20 min. Lol Same thing mine did They do that here sometime. I'm not a blind hunter much. I like to run n gun. They hang up like that and I'll crawl to a different spot a little ways away and do a new setup. They seem to respond to the call moving spots better than staying in the same location. A bird that hung up from the beginning will sometime come running on the 2nd or 3rd spot. The only problem is I'm not as young as I used to be and crawling is less fun than before.

Boy got it done with me running and gunning on this guy this afternoon. It was quiet this morning. Beautiful turkey! Nice to see dead ones.
