In one area north of Starbuck (my buddy hunts here-2 sections) in which over half of the land is crop land...there were 42 hunters trying to take a deer during the slug season. We figured it out to be about one hunter per 10-12 acres of cover. It is intense pressure. Lots of orange!

I can guarantee you that in much of WI there is no peace and quiet for firearm season. Mid week you can find some, but overall it's very similar to here...even though it's weeks later. My old place and my folks' old place both had more pressure during firearm season than my place here does. The difference is that bowhunters get to hunt the rut there, and it's generally quiet and peaceful

What's it like hunting in those areas? Are you surrounded by neighbors on all sides and corners during the gun season? My area has a lot of slug hunters. Also the farm in Otter Tail has rifle guys real close. They shoot at everything that moves, had a bullet probably 150 yards away —Zing through the CRP . Nice guys, and they don’t hunt much besides first 3 days of rifle…but that was the last time I have hunted up there during opening weekend . I like peace and solitude when hunting. Maybe others don’t care about that? But that’s why bow hunting is my passion. Yup, I wouldn't really care if I never gun hunted again. Deer are relaxed and normal w/ the bow. Gun is a clown show.

I always liked those north country hunts after opener. Even the farm country where I live slows down considerably.

I remember you and I talking about the late gun season a few years ago in MN. November 7,8,9- the bucks were chasing and it was a "rut" here in MN...it is unfortunate that we do not get to experience that every year.
In the other states, the rut is an every year experience.

The rut happens every year as fawns appear in the spring.

Is there an unoccupied direction deer can come from, or do they have to be on your place to be huntable without having to cross in front of other hunters? I've hunted where I've been totally boxed in on all sides and corners. There was no natural hiding place or undisturbed area for a deer to come from.

I’m just happy I live in a state that gets it mostly right. We will see about that in late November when I show up there.

The rut happens every year as fawns appear in the spring. That’s the only reason why bucks come to my land. Looking for the ladies.

The last two years I've had rut activity like you see on TV. Granted, it's not tons of 125-160s running around. This year with opener on the 6th, I should still have some decent activity before the hordes fuck everything up.

Cat… one property that I own borders a City Park. (No hunting allowed) Good spot, I could sit there all dayand see deer. I would say my most secluded area during the gun season. My 130 in Otter Tail has quite a few hunters. But, nasty cover all around it. So still a chance a buck could come by. #this is the 80 by the Park

I’m fortunate, I have one owner on 3 sides, mostly fields but no hunters. The 4th side is land locked and no hunters. There are plenty of hunters in the neighborhood but none right next door.

But I have never hunted the number of days that you do and not see a deer. If you don’t see improved deer hunting head south to Jackson county and I’ll hook you up.

It’s supposed to be officially over that week.

I’m fortunate, I have one owner on 3 sides, mostly fields but no hunters. The 4th side is land locked and no hunters. There are plenty of hunters in the neighborhood but none right next door. I think the ideal situation in Minnesota would involve one of these …. 1.. 80-200 acres or more Surrounded by agricultural. 2. Border a State Park, City Park or refuge. 3. Metro parcel area with no hunting around it, or archery only. 4. An impenetrable swamp on at least half of your property. Obviously there are exceptions of landowners and neighborhoods where they pass young bucks and harvest does. There are some of those in Otter Tail County I know. A guy can’t complain about the habitat here in MN, it’s as good as anywhere.
