Tipping some trees to create more of funnel is also in the works. Nothing new, but as a guy gets older . I want the archery shots to be 30 yds and in !!

Closer the better. I think I’d pass on most shots at 30? Does I prefer to be 20 yds or less. Might try some late season archery for a doe this weekend…I have to get back out in the woods !

I’m more a believer in thick stuff in the highly pressured areas. I need to do a fair bit of chainsaw work on my kanabec county place yet. I could use more browse and thermal cover. I’m pretty set on getting buckthorn murdered before I open up the canopy in most these spots though. My 6 acre yard at home had buckthorn choking out all the natives and damned if I’m going to encourage it to be like that elsewhere!

If you don't, you'll have a carpet of buckthorn in short time. Even if you do get it under control first, be prepared for a whole bunch of sprouts from the seed bank getting sun after canopy opening.

This could just be my observation and I don’t want jinx myself but I have found very little buckthorn in the wide open clearings. I usually get hazelnut and berry vines in those areas. Where I’m battling buckthorn is in the understory of a large oak or other mature tree. That being said I will definitely be inspecting these areas in the future.

Yep, definitely. On my 6 acres at home where the buckthorn got forestry mulched last spring and then resprouts got foliar sprayed through last summer and early fall, I have spots where there is a literal carpet of 3" buckthorn sprouts from seed right now. Would just like to get the berry producers dead at least before giving them more room to expand.

I agree that open areas that have been open for a number of years with no mature trees around are much less likely to have buckthorn. Seems the birds eat the berries, fly to a nearby tree and shit out the berries/seeds due to diarrhea from the berries. In newer infestations, you can almost see where "ground zero" begins. As you said, it's usually under a large, mature tree.

This is what the surrounding area of the clear cuts look like in relation to a deer. They will be 2-3 leaps away from disappearing into a wall of cover.
