I have no idea if anybody on here books vacations on vrbo, air bnb, or other such services but figured I'd give folks a heads up.
Shit is booked up all over the place. Prices are also through the roof. I've been trying to find a place south of Tampa and north of Ft. Myers in February for quite awhile. I couldn't find anything we wanted, except for places that go for thousands a night (yes thousands). I did just book a place for a reasonable price in the area the last week of January. February-early April is tough.
Just an FYI
Also, I was checking lake places out in Ottertail County for the last week of September. Holy shit, $3-4K a week is pretty common. I can rent a similar place in NE WI for about half that amount. It must be the Twin Shitties impact here.

We found a place in TX (on the beach) a couple weeks out. Maybe look at different states on the gulf coast?

Ya. Gulf Coast is generally wide open late June through late August. The only problem with that time slot is (what I hear) getting a rental car.

Are hotels in that Fort Myers area super high as well? We did a resort in Key West this year and it was high!!
Everything was booked too.

I'd imagine so, but could be wrong. Ft. Myers isn't my cup of tea, at least not in winter. I've heard it's really great in the summer though (many of the snowbirds are gone) edit...did you drive from Miami to Key West or take a charter flight?

Things are starting to open up and people have stimulus money to spend.

I don't know if there's any property management companies there though. Maybe get some relatives to do the cleaning/dealing with renter's issues?

For anybody who knows OTC lakes, can you throw some names out for smaller lakes with decent panfish and maybe a chance for some walleye/bass/pike action? I'm thinking that maybe picking out a few lakes to target instead of looking at homes to rent, then researching the lake may make more sense. Not looking for anybody to publicly disclose their honey holes, just a reasonably decent fishing lake.

Dead Lake is not small, but has many bays and fingers. It’s full of sunfish and crappie, with walleye too. I don’t think we’ve ever left the lake, without a lot of fish in the live well.
