Just booked our flights for the end of January to Punta Gorda. Prices had dropped about $150 since I checked a couple weeks ago. Maybe they would continue to drop, but I figured I'd get them booked now. We'll pay about $200 more for a week of rental car than we paid for 10 days this year. Oh well, at least we'll have one.
I'm still looking for a place on a lake to rent in OTC for fall.

More winter boredom, I've been looking at VRBO rentals in northern WI. Places that cost around $1000-$1400/week in 2008-2010 now are pushing $3500-$4500/week. Pretty crazy. What will a week's vacation in an average home on a lake in northern WI or MN cost in 10 years? $10K+?

I wouldnt spend 3500 for a week. I cant get my brain to agree to that. If it means not going, oh well. As population explodes, this will continue. No way around it. Supply v demand. God isnt making more land/lakes for the masses to recreate at.

First off, not "free". We take care of all expenses year round to maintain/ use it. Small price to pay I admit. My 2 sisters and families have never provided a dollar, but they are also infrequent tennants. Yet their families do use it. So maintenance does get to be a bit frustrating because my wife and I are the ones doing it it all. Yet small price to pay and very fortunate. That aside, what would I pay? Damn good question. 500 a day to me is insane. What does a person want get for that? I am a simple man. I dont need a log cabin. Granite counters. 25 ft ceilings. Or whatever. I love small, quaint, rustic cabins. I dont need fancy whatsoever. Thats just me. I love that lifestyle. Maybe thats why I love the cabin... it was built in the 40s. 800 sq feet total. Seasonal. But no AC does lend to some miserable days/or stay home.

That's why I put the " " around free What's crazy is that the VRBOs I used to book for $1000-$1200 a week back around 2008-'10 didn't have anything "fancy". No A/C. No granite countertops. No stainless steel appliances. Most were older places that had been updated a bit and most were clean. What we were paying for back then was a place to stay that wasn't part of a resort. You could rent a similar unit on a resort for a couple hundred bucks a week less. Some of the units I looked at yesterday for $3500ish/week were the same units I booked/looked at back then. FWIW...A guy could easily spend twice that amount ^^^ on a "fancy" place in northern WI (or OTC, I looked there yesterday too)

If so, that is absolutely crazy. I had no idea. Here is my brother in laws VRBO. Sleeps 12. Beautiful lake lot. small amenities for large groups, kayaks, paddle boards, ping pong, corn bags, hot tub, etc. comes with use of boat lift. fully furnished. he books many repeat clients www.vrbo.com/1153125?arrival=2023-04-21&departure=2023-04-29&unitId=1701362

When I look at these weekly rentals on lakes in MN and WI I feel better about paying what we're going to pay for a month on Manasota Key next January www.vrbo.com/430132The places I was looking at in northern WI for $3500ish/week are fully furnished homes on a lake. They have their own piers, but most don't offer boat lifts. Most offer "water toys", kayaks, canoe, floaties, etc. Many have fire rings and fire wood. Most are two bedroom homes, many have pull out couches. If two couples each wanted to bring a kid or two and share the costs they could. Not my idea of a vacation, but that's just me.

When he books his VRBO its always very large groups. If split 3 or 4 ways, its not too bad. I just looked at OTC, there are a number of cabins 1 to 2k. Quaint small places. I guess its all in what is desired.

I found campsites with tents for $1k...lol
