After your run in with the deputy, I wonder if shooting before daylight might have lead to the guide turning you in. I don’t have a lot of trust, even if he said to shoot.
If he wanted to kill it for humane purposes, he should have shot it himself.

If he wanted to kill it for humane purposes, he should have shot it himself. The run in was with Rez police. Not a deputy. And the story is they have had so many killings on the Rez that the new Rez director wants a gun crackdown. Especially handguns. And if it wasn’t for the backup officer thinking I was a sheriff or former sheriff in a county back in Mn because of the hat I wear, I think we would have been in jail and lost our guns. Regardless, I was not shooting from a car before legal shooting light or from a highway. Especially in front of my daughter in the back seat.

If any of you guys do think you will go on a tribe hunt remember these points. The picture off the rock outcrop shadow is where my daughters bull was when she killed it. The dead tree is what she steadied herself on to make the 250 yard shot. The bull elk are at the very top of these mountains for security. They also follow the shade around the top to stay cool as well as hide. They use distance as security. As you can see it’s so high they don’t have trees to hide behind just shadows. So if you stop on the road for to long in his view, he just steps around the corner and is gone. Here is some other things to think of fir a hunt like this: First, be up front and ask the guide if he is a drinker. Nothing wrong with drinking after the hunt. But you have to make sure he can function the next day. One Hunter and his wife from Oklahoma tied one on with their guide on Monday night and never saw the guide on Tuesday. So be careful. These people from the tribe are destitute people, place is a shit hole we were at, I mean a real dump. Almost everything on the Rez is closed down. Casino, restaurant, all but one gas station and that had all but two pumps not working. So bring your own food, snacks, drinks, Ammo, keep your tank full. They have nothing to offer for amenities other than the skinning shed which is really nice. I think I posted a picture of that. And bring good optics for spotting. It’s a must. Guide does not have any spotting scopes or range finder. Bring them with. You have to hire a resident Rez guide for your hunt. Cost can be from $250 per day to $1000 per day per hunter plus tips. If you don’t tip you get the slowed down hunt treatment. I paid $800 per day for a two person trespassing fee. They know the area like the back of their hand and can spot elk in the mountain top shadows driving by at 40mph. I told mine he will be compensated very well if all goes good, it did for the most part and I did tip him well. These Rez tags almost always sell out immediately. If you are thinking of doing a hunt you need to get lucky with your phone call the day they go on sale or be standing there at the office when they open the door at Game and Fish on sale day. Tags are normally gone in minutes. They do have a draw system as well but hardly ever works as everyone of the guides is related to the office workers at game and fish and things can be done to secure a tag and screw a guy putting in for the draw. Just keep that in mind. Edit: There is no lodging close by. They don’t provide lodging. Closest we could find was 1/2 hour away. We had a room at a small hotel with cabins for about $90/night but they shut down 3 weeks before our trip and we had to scramble to find an Air B&B for 3 times the money. So be aware.

I was just chatting with Tooln talking about how the guide cut my daughters elk up on the mountain. It did not get skinned up there. They cut all the parts off with the skin on. Within 5 minutes pieces were coming down towards the truck. When we got all the parts back to the skinning shed everything was skinned out, washed up and hung then. One thing I will note is there was one backstrap that was almost nonexistent. Guide said this bull was at least 9-10 years old and had no fat either. Game and fish have to inspect before you can take the head home. He Confirmed what the guide said on age. He pulled two teeth and will let the biologist confirm. Both agreed it would not have made it through the winter. I found that all interesting.
