Crossbow/diesel applied basally should kill young aspens and not mess with your grasses too much. There is a chance of impacting other aspens in the general area when you treat young aspens. My understanding is that a single clone can have 10s of 1000s of suckers/shoots. What ratio of Diesel to crossbow are you using? The last couple of years I have had allot of suckers show up, I need to get on top of them before they get out of hand. Thanks! 11 oz. of Crossbow to 2 gallons diesel has been wiping out buckthorn and young ironwood when I basally apply it fall-spring. I'd guess fall/winter would be better than spring for aspen. I have started adding an ounce of Milestone to the Crossbow/diesel when I am specifically targeting older ironwoods. Somewhere on the interwebs I read that was a good idea. I'd guess repeated mowing would also eliminate the sprouts, but you probably don't want to be mowing your grasses multiple times a year.

I posted this question on a pheasant hunting forum and this was recommended. You use 5oz per 25 gallons and then can spray right over the top of the trees and grasses.

The label says 3.3 oz/acre to control many woody brush species. Aspen isn't listed as one of them, but if it kills black locust I'd think it would also control aspen. I would read the label over thoroughly; it looks like it kills some grasses (not WSGs from what I can tell) and timing is important. It looks like some good stuff for controlling tough broadleaf weeds too. At $188 for 1.25 lbs. I'll let you run the experiment on how good or bad it is . I know 1.25 lbs. would cover plenty of ground though. www.domyown.com/chaparral-herbicide-p-20958.htmlwww.domyown.com/msds/CHAPARRALHERBICIDELABEL.pdf
