I’m not a car guy. Working on vehicles is a step worse than plumbing in my opinion but I do a little now and then. I’m pretty ignorant on this stuff compared to most on here.
I have a 2004 Honda Pilot. It’s my hunting rig and beater. I don’t drive it a lot. A few months ago I had driven it and parked. When I started it to go home, I could not get it out of park. The P light was not lit up on the dash either.
Did some google and YouTube research. If you stick a key in a hole on top of the steering column, you can reset something. Then start the engine, shift to drive and take off. Next time you stop, you have to do it again.
I drove it off and on this summer. Sometimes no issue. Sometimes I had to reset it. One occasion I couldn’t get it to reset. More YouTube and I learned I could shift into neutral to start the engine then shift into drive.
I’ve been told it’s the neutral safety switch. I’ve been told there is no way it’s that.
Anyone have an idea of what can fix it?

Never heard of such a thing. Well that’s been the most common answer that I have heard.

For weird things, I bite the bullet a d take it to a dealer. I would too. But this thing is worth maybe a couple grand. Don’t seem like something worth putting dealer dollars into. I’ll keep driving it till I can’t. Hopefully it doesn’t die in the sticks in the middle of winter.

Bring a wheel chock with you everywhere and park it in neutral.

I don't know about the problem....but I do know 24" of ramp and 60 mph is plenty enough to ramp a car it you so wish! It may fix your problem one way or another.

Most vehicles have a forum or two specifically for the model. I've had good luck searching them for my problems.

I had a similar issue with my ''08 Impala. I googled the symptoms and there was a connector problem common on that sensor, but it wasn't too easy to get to.
I'm not super good at that stuff, but there is usually a YouTube video that shows how to do it. A trip to the junkyard or parts store is usually much cheaper than a service station.
My first attempt didn't work, so I had to use a long handled screwdriver to hit a reset button under the shifter. My second attempt worked though and i was able to gets a couple more years out of the old beater.

If I can disassemble, clean out a mouse nest, and completely reassemble an Empire Direct Vent heater at 3AM using a headlamp and a computer repair toolkit, you can fix this Honda.

I had a similar issue on my Tacoma. The service guy took the cover off the shift assembly and lubed the shifter. It’s worked fine since. Unfortunately he informed me there was a hole in the muffler so that was replaced. The shifter cost me $50 The muffler assembly was $800 or so. I think the shifter was just gummed up. The vehicle has a:sensor where it won’t start if it doesn’t see it in park and won’t allow it to start. Tge night I went to drop it off I couldn’t get it started. Called the tow company. The kid got it in neutral and got it started. He didn’t charge me so I gave him $20 and drove it up to the garage. The guy drove it into his garage and on the lift. We left. He had it fixed pretty quickly and then did the muffler. Hopefully yours is the easy lube fix.
