I like the idea of an RV for when you work, that would be ideal. My wife and I plan on doing some RVing in retirement. One thing about buying into a community is the friends you make while you live in that community. You also have stability which you lose as a renter as most often rental properties are temporary. As a owner you also get to have your things in a second home that provides you the same feeling as your original home. If it feels like home it doesn't matter what location you are in. You lose that feeling when you rent as you can't have your own stuff. I know Mo has his deer mount in his bar area, you can't do that in a rental. My wife and I spent our first year in out new winter home last year and will again this year. We are decorating and buying furniture so that it has our memories and is basically our second home. These are some of the points I debate with when weighing owning/renting. It would be great to fly in to the airport, take a taxi to your second home and be "living". Vehicle in the garage and all of your stuff right there ready to use. The down side is that unless you are quite wealthy, you are stuck vacationing/living in that one spot. I suppose there are plenty of folks who can own a second home and still travel widely but we won't be in that income bracket. We like SW FL, but we also enjoy going other places. The main reason I entertain buying a place somewhere else is to GTFO of this tax nightmare state. Agree, the decision to buy could come late in life when travel to multiple locations is less appealing. One thing that might work would be prepare to buy and when the bottom occurs buy a unit. Depending on the deal you got you may be able to have both. If not rent out the unit to finance your travel. One thing about renting out a home in a 55+ area is the renters are typically not deadbeats so they take care of your property. Could be a smart strategy if planned and executed correctly.

Following you guys is eye opening! I never in my life dreamed of owning a winter home or vacation home. I'm geared towards wanting to stay where I'm at when I retire. Spent a majority of my adult life trying to make that happen. Now my goal is to have it paid off when I retire and owe nothing. Then the place is to stay in the family. Kind of a legacy thing. Being so willing to be mobile and ready to up and leave for months at a time blows my mind.

You need to experience a Minnesota or Wisconsin winter and you will quickly understand why we want to avoid it, particularly when you age.

There's a reason most snowbirds are from northern states (and Canadian provinces).

I am not all that high on it to be honest. I could live a month in the south...any longer and I would probably be stir crazy. But maybe I will adjust. November will be a hunting month and I like December in MN to be honest, some snow and ice fishing.
Not very fond of Jan, Feb, or early March however.

No snow. Being out of here for Feb. and March would be my preference. If I ever could tolerate that long (sure can't at this point in my life), maybe we'd add Jan. at some point.

What the hell does a person do for 4 months without having some kind of work to do?

What the hell does a person do for 4 months without having some kind of work to do? If I was retired. If I could work remotely, I'd probably be able to do it too. Anything is better than winter here. Golf, beach, hike, pickleball, tennis, swim, fish, etc. All kinds of outdoor activities to do down there.

I understand that lots of "old" folks have their weekly schedules of activities. Maybe I could do that someday, but I doubt it. I'm not a real social kinda guy. I need to do something productive after a few days of sitting around doing nothing (which is what I'd call golf, beach, hiking, pickleball, etc.). Right now, I can vacation and enjoy it for about a week. After that, I'm looking to do some work of some kind. This is one big thing that I think about when I'm debating owning and renting. Unless I can change how I think regarding "doing nothing" I'll need a place of my own so I have some kind of work to do.
