I was just looking at a few tree ordering sites for next spring. In the last week or so, Itasca sold out of Norway spruce for next year. University of ID sold out of a bunch of the varieties I was looking at in the same time frame. People must be ordering very early this year, and/or the sources didn't grow as many.

I just got an itasca flyer in the mail the other day. Doubt I order anything from them for next year. Trying not to plant much for trees next year instead take care of the apples I planted this year correctly. I've got 5 crabs ordered from NWC. Might do a few oaks from somewhere and call it good.

Care for it, and put gypsum and flax in once a year, and you shall attain ever lasting life." -Book of Skoog chapter 3 verse 17.

The previously planted trees are getting a soaking in the past month. This helps a lot. Looks like another inch here.

My only concern now is this "extended" fall is keeping stuff alive and growing much longer than normal. I sure hope we don't go straight to below zero weather in November like we have in recent past years.

I was going to order some swamp white oaks from MDC but, they were sold out of them and several things. I will stratify the chestnut seeds this winter snd spring plant but, I’m not ordering and trees this year. I also ordered some scions from Fedco to graft onto my father in-law’s old apple tree. I’ll be taking off some 4” wide uprights and want to graft in scions to close up the wounds.

I've decided I'm only ordering a couple dozen pines and some wild apple plugs from Univ. of ID and maybe one hundred white spruce from our SWCD. I swore I wasn't going to add any new apple varieties from Fedco, but have decided to pick up a Sweet Sal scion. I'll also pick up another Aroostock Sunset and 2 more Fletcher Sweet scions from them. I already have those two, but want to add another few scions on some older trees to hopefully insure I'll always have at least one source of scions (and fruit) in the future. Those two aren't always available from Fedco or elsewhere.

I have ordered from them several times. Probably will again this year.

Just watched this video on spruce and Egyptian wheat for screening. I am going to work on more of this sort of thing in the coming years. Just a bit here and a bit there.....but if I can sneak into some of my stands better.....I gotta believe it will pay some dividends. (and it keeps me off the streets). This kinda reminds me of Art's land....lots of narrow trails though the timber. Nice.

This kinda reminds me of Art's land....lots of narrow trails though the timber. Nice. My use of narrow trails is based on a series of books by DrKen Nordberg that were written 20-30 years ago. He hunted the Aitkin country and then the edge of the boundary waters. He favored narrow trails for the deer that he maintained and then short, narrow stand access trails. He kept everything narrow and felt that was the key. Just walking trails, not 4 wheeler trails. His trails were just the size of what a man could walk through, and were about what a cruising buck would sneak through.

I mostly read Nordberg's books on Bear Hunting. His words were gospel on that subject at one point. Likely still are.
