I’m still planting Spruce, Pine, Oak, Apple at 53 … but I’m leaving my land to the kids as well. So there’s motivation for that .
Remember a Spruce tree planted at 53 will be 10-14 feet tall at age 63!

I just haven't had luck planting any conifers without extreme protection. I bet we put in 1500 trees on the joint property in the first 4 years, and have none that lived. Black spruce, white spruce, norway spruce, balsam fir. And that was after I started reading about site matching. Most of the tube trees won't make it without ongoing intervention either. There's got to be something different about the soil there, cause it doesn't grow anything that isn't already there. Now, the chainsaw has brought me far more productivity at Stab Camp. I'm lucky in that I've got a shit ton of good stuff already out there that just needs some breathing room. One of my favorite times of the year is going out in May and seeing the flush of new growth on released balsams and black spruce, and all the other stuff. I was looking over my tag alder cuts from 3 years ago. I don't think I'm going to trim those down yet. They're still decent in terms of ground clutter and not making a canopy. I know you've all seen these pics. I just really like them.

You gotta have mature evergreens to get re-gen. None here except a few red cedars and those get the axe when I find them.

I'm not planning to plant any trees in 2022, but I will be moving a bunch around. After I get those maples moved to the yard, I'm gonna invest some time in moving some white spruce outta the ditch and over to some of my high spots. I'll likely do the smaller ones as I expect it's gonna be tricky to dig a hole where I'm going. Maybe if they come from my area, and aren't grown with fertilizer, they'll not stand out as such a delicious snack. I've got 6 to replace along the hay field that didn't survive the drought. Those will be bigger.

Just ordered 100 Black Hills spruce and 50 Ponderosa pines. You just need to keep planting trees as long as you have the ability to do so I guess.

I ordered 50 more shrubs today to add to the other 125 and 12 fruit/nut trees already on order. I just can’t help myself. Ok, but that’s it, I’m done.

Kind of a requirement to stick around, right? No doubt. I said I was done planting fruit trees. Have fucking 10 coming this spring. I was done after the drought last summer and was sick of watering them. So this fall, I planted 3 more and have two more in pots in the garden. I also planted about 10 groups of apple seeds. I am contemplating some pears, but I don’t know where to put them. Crab apples just seem like more of a sure thing than pears in this climate.
