When I'm walking in or out in the dark, I always carry a flashlight and frequently wave it around so I hopefully won't get shot

I once shot a bucket within the last two minutes of a sixteen day rifle season. ^That is the stuff of a real JPS legend right there. .

I like the last hour in the evening. Second choice would be 8am-10 am in the hardwoods on a cold morning during the rut. My top 3 bucks are last hour...however.

With a bow and less overall hunting pressure evening hunts have been better for me.
During gun season in pressured areas opening morning is by far the best time to bag a buck since the pressure makes many deer nocturnal very quickly.

Yep...I hunt all hours on opening weekend.....and after opening weekend.....I mostly hunt evenings over narrow plots (more like shooting lanes with food in 'em). Maybe should add some late morning hunts too......I just get too lazy to get up at early morning hours. I'll leave that to young JPS Bucks like Art. .

Kinda surprised nobody has picked early morning. What the hell am I getting out of bed so early for? F'n Biden. The problem with early mornings here is that pretty much my entire place is used for bedding now. I've got doe groups all over the place. Getting into a stand in the early a.m. without getting busted isn't easy.

Getting into a stand in the early a.m. without getting busted isn't easy. ^ That is really our situation too. Hard to access many of my stands. Not sure our hunters are stealthy enough on opening weekend. Oh well....it is what it is. I decided not to hunt tonight.....too windy and not going to risk an attempt when the conditions are not perfect. Maybe another day or two. After this weekend.....I won't hunt until rifle opener. $185 out of state bow hunting license - wasted.....if I don't connect. Spent my afternoon turning my crossbow....which was off considerably.

Looking at the 6 shoulder mounts on my wall, 2 euro mounts, and the rack from the one I shot this year, there was ONE deer shot midday, but the rest were afternoon. I know a lotta folks have great luck in the morning, but I am not one of them. A lotta guys shoot good 3 year olds acting dumb and getting back to bed late, but if you want to shoot a MATURE deer, generally afternoons and even midday are best. Mature deer get back to bed before daylight, and then will check bedding areas after all the does have bedded down. Or will follow a doe that he’s courting to a food source.
The three largest deer I’ve ever seen were in the afternoon. Who wants to walk around in the dark anyway.
The best time(s) to kill a good buck as far as what phase of the season? 1. Early season, very first hunt while he’s still on a food source 2. Nov 7-8 which is juuust before the breeding begins and they start to lockdown 3. Black Friday. Most does have been bred and they’re looking for that last hot doe 4. Christmas-New year’s with a cold front and food source

November 4-8 should be great this year if the long term forecast is accurate.
