A few things came to mind this year.
I learned where the deer were bedding in relation to the SPC. That all changed when the neighbors showed up, and it helped me.
I learned I need to run cameras on the front of my property for a while. The rub I found near the biff actually had 4 more within 20' of the first one. Something spent some time there skinning my willows. I also don't see much sign on the front of my property other than right by the biff and in the yard plot. I'm intending to get a few more low impact stands set up around the outter perimeter of my place, but I need some intel to know what's going on. Don't see much for tracks on the new trails I made up front.
Need more stands. With the kids coming up, and me taking them to the ground blinds, they're seeing deer, and they wanna hunt here. Dad still wants to hunt public, but that is proving to be very difficult to find a spot that hasn't been deemed squat titled by a fud. "This has been our spot for 30 years" kind of shit. I am grateful it hasn't escalated from there. I don't enjoy conflict with people who have nothing to lose, nor the awareness to consider it if they did.

Did you hunt at all when you were there for gun season?

I learned that SD is far more generous than I am. No way am I letting a bunch of people firearm hunt my 40 acre parcel after I did all the work. I let the kids bowhunt here one or two weekends a year. I did offer a young guy in town to come whack a couple does this week, but he declined. Opening weekend of firearm...I'm not a good sharer.

I learned my place is the food destination and the neighbors are the bedding(which I kind of knew already). If all goes as planned with my fields next year my hunting will be just as good or better then this, which was hard to beat.

Did you hunt at all when you were there for gun season? I went out opening morning alone cause the family didn’t get here until late morning. Otherwise, I never carried a weapon. Just guided. They’re all gone now except Omaha Steve. So we’re going after it from here now.

I’ve got some pretty tight expectations on anyone that hunts here, and everyone contributes something. I will say I really wanted to be the one to get my nephew his first deer. That meant a lot to me. My uncle Frank, now long dead, took me to his best spot and got me my first deer. Not having any of my own kids that I’m aware of, I want to leave some kind and legacy behind. If that’s getting my nephews into hunting, and learning how precious freedom and private land is, I think I’ve done the world a small favor. Otherwise, there are rules. You stay in the stand until the hunt is over, no walking around, if the wind ain’t right, you ain’t hunting that spot, pick up your shit around the cabin, and help out. Shoot what u want. Have fun. I will say, the politics are changing quickly as things are beginning to go the right way here, and the boys really like hunting here.

I've got the soil test going right now, amendments down this fall if the weather holds, Seed from big MO once the soil test comes in, till this spring, then plant my secret weapon. With God's blessing and a little rain I'll have deer coming out my ears next fall.

Pumpkins! I need to plant more pumpkins.
Have patience when you think you're busted by an old Nanny Doe. More than one time we had long, long staring contests. As long as the wind was right the deer eventually went back to her life and ate rye.
I need to make improve my stand access a lot to keep from spooking shit on my way in and out.

I mowed the leaves on our trails a few times this fall. Worked great! It’s nice not crunching thru leaves the entire way in/out.

I always hunt my south ridge with a south wind. North ridge with a north wind. I need to set stands on each ridge so I can hunt either with either wind. I just hunted 7 days with almost no south winds. Very unusual.
No matter how many stands I hang, I always need another.

I need more rifle practice, I can kill anything with a shotgun bird shot, but never have been a big rifle shooter/practice.
After missing a decent buck on Saturday that should of been dead. I want to feel more comfortable.
