Getting ready to teach myself chainsaw maintenance and tuning at youtube university. I got a hunch it's pretty simple, and it's time I figure it out. For what I was getting charged in SF, I could throw the saw away every other year and buy a new one.

Have fun! I've found the hardest part is carb tuning, but when I have problems dialing one in it ends up being due to a cracked or faulty gasket/rubber. I don't sharpen my own chains. Way easier for me to pay for that.

I took all mine in and got them done for $7 each I think. I did this whole season on one chain, and I'm probably not going to change it out yet. It still sails through everything I'm working on. I've got 6 sharp chains hanging now, so I'll be good until the rapture.

What is it you need to do to a chainsaw? I change the air filters annually, new spark plug maybe every other year, and run premium gas with Stabil all the time. Pay somebody to sharpen my chains. Until I need a new carb (just buy a new carb kit, don't bother to rebuild) I'm not sure what else a guy is supposed to do?

A few other things I came across were cleaning the shit out from under the cover by the drive sprocket. Checking that the oiler ain't blocked. Pull the fuel line outta the gas tank to check for crud on the filter. Maybe flip the bar every other year or so to ensure even wear. Check the recoil rope for wear. On the old saw my dad had when I was a kid, we'd have to grease the end of the bar, but it doesn't seem like Stihl has that on the MS-250?

I must be in the minority for sharpening chains. It only takes 5 minutes. Maybe I don’t notice how dull they are compared to new but the cut fine.
