Where do you send your hides to get tanned? My 7 and 9 year old boys want to start trapping more and they want tanned hides for their room. I'm not familiar with places that do that though. We normally trap to help out the turkeys and pheasants and to get some free tree fertilizer, but getting a few of the better hides tanned sounds good. I've done a few home tan kits but have also sent a few to this place called "moyle mink and tannery". I skin flesh and dry them all my hand before that. Wish we had pheasant here man I guess back in the 70s 80s we had good numbers in OH but not anymore

Has changes in farming practices caused the drop in pheasant numbers?

As long as I've been around there have never been pheasant. I think there was a terrible blizzard in the 70s and 80s that hit them hard but I think its like you said changing farm practices and habitat. Turkeys were not as populated at the time either

I’m a little older. Back in the 80s I was a kid growing up in the area of the original turkey stocking. Turkeys were rare. Quail were reduced in a late 70’s blizzard and continued to decline so they were kind of rare too. We used to shoot quail while rabbit hunting but I wouldn’t shoot one now.
We never had pheasant in the SE part of the state. People said it had something to do with the soil. Who knows. As you go north and west things flatten out and there were pheasants. Troopers place is probably in the transition zone of having pheasant and quail back in the day. I think any pheasant Ohio has now is mostly north of us.
I don’t think turkeys contributed to the decline of pheasant or quail in Ohio so calm down Sandbur.

This hasn’t been proven.

I guess our population of grouse is way down too. Use to jump them while rabbit hunting and hear them drumming. I haven’t heard or seen one in 15-20 years.
Now the turkey population is down. The state just reduced our bag limit from 2 to 1. If turkeys are at fault, makes sense some of the other birds should bounce back.

I suspect many wildlife populations go in cycles and we don’t know why. Some cycles may be so long that we don’t recognize them.

Although I didnt experience this eara I know back in the day a lot more guys trapped. The fur prices were so good it was an easy excuse to make a lot of money. The fur market has been declining. It hit a peak from probably 2012-2014 when it was again very lucrative but still the overall number of trappers is way down. Ground nesting birds have to deal with the fragmented habitat but I'm sure our coon/possum/coyote numbers are also probably 10x what they were kn the 70s with a 90%reduction in trappers. Coon hunting is falling off too or half the guys just run coon and dont shoot them

I've hear some people try to say coyote are good because they will kill hunt and eat possum and coon. They are a huge predator of fox and feral cat but as far as I know they dont eat possum or coon whatsoever. I have a carcass pit that has literally seen over a thousand coon or possum and never ever has a coyote eaten them. I'm sure if it was a last resort they would eat it but as an sample they will drag out and eat fox AND other coyotes and eat then but not eat either coon or possum. So a helpful reminder dont use coon/possum as bait your wasting your time.
Another thing I wanted to add on the whole let the coyote go theory is that a coyote is a wild animal and they cant go to a vet they know this. A tussle with a coon would almost certainly end in some nasty bites and scratches most wild animals dont take unnecessary risks and killing an animal like a coon they're not even gonna eat is pretty unnecessary although I'm sure they might kill or harass a smaller coon for fun.
In my opinion it's best to cover your bases and take them all out.

There's a few less od these guys hanging around. Neighbor to the north has been shooting them and I've been trapping this week. They got tough. Had several traps dug up. Need to die and wax everything later this winter and start over.
