I wonder if that is why white pine are not common in your area. I had planted several currants a few years ago and then realized they didn’t do nice things to White Pines so I had to kill them. I have white pines surrounding a good portion of my property. I have a couple white pines and not too concerned. BUT I have a Christmas tree farm on section north of me. At what distance would they be a threat?

I haven't grown any currants. I've got loads of wild gooseberries here. Since they're related to currants, I'd think that currants are also easy to grow but that's just a guess. I wonder if that is why white pine are not common in your area. Could be. I had gooseberries and white pines on my old place, but maybe it's different here.

I am about 90% sure I saw elderberries blooming yesterday on our drive in-land. Google seems to confirm it. I'm waiting to hear from some other fruit geeks on another forum if it's possible. Pretty crazy if they are indeed the same (Sambucus nigra) elderberries I see blooming in WI and MN in early/mid summer.

Just ordered 7 bushes of 5 elderberry varieties from Indiana Berry. I hope they do well, and I can make my own elderberry syrup someday. My elderberries came today. I got them planted and put a few layers of cardboard around them for mulch. Maybe I can make eldberry wine someday

My elderberries all were alive going into winter. We'll see what spring brings.
I learned tonight that elderberry syrup/lemon juice/diet tonic/vodka makes a darn good ketogenic drink

Anyone try elderberry cuttings without a rooting hormone? I know ROD doesn’t need any but not sure about elderberry

Anyone try elderberry cuttings without a rooting hormone? I know ROD doesn’t need any but not sure about elderberry I have not, but have read of others doing so with success. If you got good results with ROD cuttings and no hormone, I'd think you'd be good to go. I never had much success with ROD that way. FWIW...I just ordered some rooting hormone from Amazon. I'm going to try some air layering on a pear tree. The stuff was pretty cheap for what will probably be a lifetime supply for me.

I have 2 bottles and both are at the property. One of my cuttings was sprouting a leaf when it showed up. I shoved it in the dirt tonight. Will bring back a hormone bottle after the weekend and use on the remaining 3 sticks. Good side by side test.
On a side note, I planted 3 blueberry cuttings into cups a few weeks ago. 2 of 3 are showing growth. They got the hormone.
