The younger patch was planted by hand and just in nobpatter. I like the natural look. That area was a patch of short grass in the reed canary and spruce seem to take off quicker without the RC.

Thanks for the responses. I went with 10' between trees and probably close to that between the two rows. I basically planted on both sides of my EW screen last year which was two passes with the 4' tiller. Another 25 next year will complete the two row screen. I'm thinking of trying white spruce for those.

This is a quick view of a bedding area I planted at the edge of the reed canary grass. Those of you who have been around for awhile, might remember me speaking of the tennis racket shaped spot.

I’ve found that a combo of conifers and swamp/wetland seems to be the ticket for creating bedding. If I were to do over again. I’d plant more areas like that, concentrate on that .

Spruce along the edge of RC and willows works for me. I only battle the RC to get spruce and willows started. I see no sense in fighting RC to plant NWSG.

I found a couple single, large beds tucked back under some leaning tag alders in tall grass/sedge along the edge of my tamarack swamp yesterday. Pretty sure I know who made them

Most of you have seen this before, but this is where I carried some spruce down in the tag alders about 20 years ago. I think I released them three times and shouldn’t have to do it again. I like this type of cover. It reminds me of the northwoods.

I did my after muzzleloader season walk through today. It is nice to see deer bedding under spruce that were planted 20-30 years ago. I would estimate 8-10 deer survived season.

How does the post season deer population this year compare with the last few years?

How does the post season deer population this year compare with the last few years? I think we are down 50-60 per cent, but it is hard to tell. With snow and cold, deer move my way.

I’d guess a decrease of 30%? It’s hard to assess, but I’m not seeing the normal late season deer either . It can’t be just the weather !
