Been a while.
so for the sun scald prevention.
What is the preferred mix? 50/50 latex white and water?
Should it be applied annually? how far up the tree do you paint? I assume if I have tree tubes on the ground up a couple feet for rodent protection, I only need/should paint from the top of the tube up(however high)?
Any other points?

Listen to Stu more than me, but I apply it every other year or so when it starts to wear out. I apply it as high as I can reach and even a little bit on exposed limbs that lack side branches.
I think Stu adds some grout for apple borer prevention.
You don’t need it under tree tubes.
It sounds like you are getting an interest in apple trees!

I have been very interested in general apples. I have no plans to get into cross breeding via artificial grafting or whatever you call all that stuff. LOLLLL
I have 20 apples at the cabin on the backlot now. 12 apples and 3 pears at the farm. And 6 apples at home.
I sprayed the home and cabin trees with copper fungicide 2 times this spring. I havent been to the farm yet. Too busy on spring tasks and fishing. Heading to the farm this weekend to do random tasks that I come across and tilling one plot with the ATV and not decided yet what I am planting on it.

I paint every 2-3 years depending on how the paint is holding up. Last time I painted with an electric spray gun and got really good coverage but it was messy. Painting by hand is a pain. The best method I have seen I think is Ben's where he lightens the spray and uses a pump weed sprayer to apply. I will probably look at this method as it would make it much easier and less messy. I would call it more of a white-wash than a paint.
Not sure if you are losing anything by going with a lighter white-wash.

I mix 2 qts. interior white latex with a qt. of water and a qt. of joint compound. I brush it on. I've got trees going on year 3 that won't need to be painted again this fall. Brushing it on is a PITA and a time sucker. Do it once and you're good for a minimum of 2 years and possibly more.
I have read in the recent past that a guy shouldn't paint young trees. Something to do with respiration

Something to do with respiration That is interesting about respiration. I only paint about 50-60% of the circumference. You probably have to decide which is more of a problem in your climate. I can remember one very experienced guy with an orchard out Carl’s way that said sunscauld isn’t a major problem. I think a test winter changed his thinking.

I lost several and had many trees damaged on my Rusk County place because of SW injury. Issues dramatically decreased after I started painting the trunks.
I use a 50/50 white interior latex/water mix. I spray mine on with a cheap 1 or 2 gallon hand pump sprayer. That's faster for me since I don't have to take down any cages - just put the nozzle through the cage and spray away. I usually spray about every other year.

I believe the joint compound is more for borers than sun scald but I could be wrong.

If you use a sprayer, just remember to run a full tank of clean water through after you are done so everything is cleaned out. And also screw the pump back on the tank when it is still a little wet. That helps prevent the O-ring from drying out and you can typically get several years from one sprayer.
I previously left them separate to dry out since I was worried about mold, but that often lead to dry and cracked O-rings that didn't work the next year. I haven't had any issues after screwing it in tight after flushing it with water.

I have never seen an apple tree in an Ohio orchard that is painted. Is this an issue with sun reflecting off of snow all winter? We rarely have snow for more than a few days at a time.

I think it has more to do with the cold on sunny days. The trunk absorbs the heat and then when sun goes down temp rapidly drops and causes the sun scald. I am experimenting with a can of white flex seal. I sprayed some trees with apple borer holes to plug them but I am hoping it will double as sun protection. Been a couple months and the trees are still alive so hoping it might work.
