Can you get a small tractor in there?
A middle buster would be a great tool in that spot to rip everything up roots and all.
Go to about the 8 minute mark. You can buy these at Fleet for 200 to 250.

Sumac spreads via rhizomes. I don't think 2-4D will do much to those rhizomes. I think you'll need to work that ground up a few times and hit new growth with something like Crossbow or Garlon.

Well here is the start of one. Was able to play with the brothers skidsteer and brush hog, cleared out a spot behind the house that was nothing but 10ft high mature sumac, I foresee many hours of picking up sticks in my future, Maybe roundup and rye, then call it good for this fall?

I yes I could get a tractor in there and that's a great idea Stu you maybe right, I'm curious to see what actually comes back next spring I have a single shank ripper such as shown in the pic. I used it on one of my swamp plots and it really did pull up allot of roots. Might have made more work out of it than is solved tho? I also used it to install about 300 feet of 1" water line at my daughters place. Really worked slick for that. I always thought I would use it to plant a row of trees or for cuttings.....but never have done so. Not sure mine has been used in the last 8 years. If you just have that small plot.....I'd loan it to you. I'll never wear it out....and its pretty much indestructible. Edit: Mine is a King Kutter Brand. They actually pull pretty easy all the way down to 2 feet or so. I used mine with a 30 HP tractor....no sweat.

This is my third of an acre cut out of a 5 acre field. It was brassica, peas, and WW. They have been keeping it mowed tight.

I have a ton of rocks so I use the setup up above and then drag my chain harrow behind that. It works good and leaves a pretty smooth plantable field after a couple passes. I have also used it to plant rows of shrubs

I still am not sure if this was a good idea for the garden or not.
