This is one of my first wood carvings that I made decades ago for my uncle. It was made from a block of pine of some sort and I Inherited it after he moved to the happy hunting grounds. I can remember my Dad showing the first deer stand I had ever seen and that was in the early to mid 60’s. He had nailed a small platform about 6 feet up in a tree. I think state law said they couldn’t be over 6 feet up. Previous to that, no one used deer stands. They stood behind a tree, or sat on a log or stump. Most of the hunting was done by deer drives and people didn’t stand in one location for much longer than an hour. Who else hunted before deer stands were very common? My first bow kill was from standing on a limb on a bur oak. Recurve bow. I don’t think we started using stands until I was in my teens. The first stands were what ever scrap lumber was laying around, probably 8-10’ up. For years my dad sat at the base of the same giant maple on top of a ridge. My first few years were spent next to him there. The spot was called “old faithful”, a lot of deer died on that ridge. I’ve got a spot down by Miesville MN I call “the killing stump” sounds like your old faithful. I will never divulge the spot.

Got my first SD deer today. I have a few does that bed in the grove behind the house. The wind was right and weather perfect for a hunt. I had a good idea where they’d be bedded so I just walked out to the road and still hunted from the downwind side. I took two hours to go 100 yards. When I got near the bedding zone I just leaned against a tree and waited. The first one that stood up to stretch her legs got shot. It was a frontal shot from maybe 25 yards. I had an antlerless only muzzleloader tag. X Mark’s the spot. I just moseyed in from the road to the east. Congrats Kooch!!

Roughing it today. Do the deer like to wake up to the smell of a good cup?

Roughing it today. Do the deer like to wake up to the smell of a good cup? I was told the private land deer expect a good cup in the morning. Mine must not have been good enough.😔

Pic taken 12/7 from near stand. Muzzy hunter was not there. Guess we have enough seed/deer for next year.

Neighbor shot a doe with a muzzleloader last night. That should be about the last deer shot with any weapon (legally anyway) around here until next year.

While planting trees at the Sportsmans Club/ Range, we were talking about the Early Antlerless Season. Two of the guys don’t think they will participate this fall as it seemed to hurt the regular season last year.

We used to have a stupid "T-zone" hunt which was a 4 day antlerless end of October. Fucked up bowhunting for sure and probably didn't help gun even though that was weeks away yet.
