I bought 1200 lbs of winter rye from Welters about a week ago.....along with my other seeds for the year. I'm having it shipped here in mid may. I'm a cheapskate. I don't want to pay shipping. I checked on two bags of winter rye from Albert Lea seeds. Shipping was more than the seed. If I can find a couple bags locally for 50% more than the AL seed price, I'd be money ahead. I'd check with proag. If they don't have it, I'm guessing they might know who would. There's also hunts and leaf river up in Wadena. I'll check with my neighbor and see if he has anything left as well

I don't want that bin run rye from ProgAg in Eagle Bend. I'm pretty sure the co-op in L.P. would order me in a bag of rye from AL seed and sell it to me without shipping cost (at least not what I'd pay anyway). If your neighbor has non-bin run rye left I'd buy a couple bags from him.

Found several places that had it for sale close to me when I did a search.

Actually, the first guy I'm going to ask is the dairy guy I talk to most every weekend who farms just west of L.P. He doesn't grow any rye (he's on heavy ground), but I'm sure he knows somebody who does.

I could probably get it for free or next to nothing if you're interested.

I'd be surprised if a seed dealer in your area doesn't carry it. There isn't a lot of rye planted around here, but it is still almost always available at the local seed supplier I use.
Your plan to use spring planted rye instead of oats is a good one since there is no danger of that growing viable seed.

When I first planted our lawn, I mixed rye and oats . It was spring time. I never mowed so much grass in my life. I added a bit of fertilizer.

Believe me.....I hate paying for freight too. But when I combined some seeds that they pay 1/2 the freight on.....with my winter rye order......the total freight bill for 1700 lbs of seeds came to $160......which I did not think was too bad. Plus.....they had a 3% early buy discount for Feb....wich was about $40 in savings. So, I pulled the trigger. We are heading to OZ pretty soon.....and wont get back until early May. That is when I will have Welter's ship my order. Saves me from running all over creation in spring / summer to gather seeds. I do wish we had a co-op around here tho. Seems I am using many of these seeds to build my fertilizer into the soil now. Grin. Kinda liking that approach. I also bought another load of ag-lime for May delivery. May be the last time I apply lime to my sand. I think I will sell my lime spreader after this application. Not sure yet. Dont use my tiller or disk anymore either.....and didnt use my cultipacker last year either. Game has changed with no-till. I just cannot bring myself to sell those implements yet. This is the second year where I bought 90% of my seeds at the same time. I think that will be my plan going forward. Seems allot of popular seeds sell out in season.

I'm convinced that's where my hemp nettle infestation came from, so I'm gun shy now.

Any idea how long it will take surface applied ag lime to penetrate?

I think both were in the $20/bag range last year when they were less than half that a couple years ago.

Rye was 8 bucks less than 5 years ago i think. This is all just nuts Not certified rye. I paid $22 for a bag of rye from LaCrosse Seed at the L.P. co-op sometime around 2015 or '16. Bin run rye or double fanned seed at Eagle Bend was $8/bag the last time I bought there, and that was at least 4 years ago. I think it's about the same price now.
