A sporterized Mauser model 98 in 30.06. I shot a lot of animals with it before I retired her, then sold it to my nephew. Good old gun.

I grew up in a shotgun zone. Used my Winchester Model 12 in 16 gauge for most everything. I still got quite a few slugs for that gun. Later.....a 721 Remington in 30-06......that kicked like a mule.

I hunted one year with the 410 single shot and never fired a shot. The first rifle I used and killed a deer with was a 32 Special, model 94.
Foggy, I always like those model 12’s for ducks.

Dad bought me a used .30 Remington from the hardware store in Necedah, WI. I killed a number of deer with that rifle, but it would occasionally not fire due to a weak firing pin. That cost me a nice buck (I doubt I'd think it was a nice buck now, but it was in 1982) and Dad traded it in on a Remington Model 4 semi-auto. That's still in my gun locker. I haven't fired it for years.

Started with my dads .270. When I got my first real job at 22 and my first bonus it went straight to buying my own .270. Havent pulled it out of the cabinet since 2014.

Don't think I actually owned a deer rifle until the wife bought me a .308 for our 10th anniversary. Had ARs, SKSs, and some other stuff along the way. Shoot deer with a bow.

I started with an Ithaca Model 37 lightweight 20 ga.smooth bore with rifle sights.I still have this shotgun. Than when I started hunting Northern Wisconsin I got a Remington 742 in 30-06. I then got a Ruger M77 mark 2 in 7mm mag. Still have that rifle, grandson used it last 2 years. I then got a Browning Stainless Stalker in 300 win mag with Boss System. This is my go to gun as it usually drops deer in their tracks.

7.7mm Jap my Uncle Leanard had from the war. Not sure exactly how he got it but it was a hand me down I ended up with. Damn gun did not have a safety on it so it was short lived and I went to Remington model 1903 in 3006, great gun.

He beat the ground with his head a few times got up and ran away. I sat there in stunned silence. Parents got me a .243 the next year. Retired that last year as I bought a 6.5 Creedmoor a couple years ago. Finally had a chance to use it this year. Deer dropped right there. I'm sold!

A remington 30-06 pump was my first rifle and a smooth bore 20 gauge Winchester pump shotgun was my first shotgun. Both guns sucked. The Remington rifle would frequently jam and the Winchester 20 gauge wasn't very accurate.
I learned what I didn't like about those guns, and they were traded in. Now I use a Remington 700 7mm bolt action for Wisconsin and western hunts and a Savage 220 for slug hunts in MN.

When the one of the deer run off after you shoot it with your 6.5 Creedmoor or for that matter .243, talk to me. I cringe when a hunter tells me he is shooting a 243 or 6.5 creedmoor when guiding for bear, they leave very little to no blood trail and that is when they shoot them in the wheel house. A guy on facebook group for game recovery dog tracking just listed the calibers that he at the least success in recovering, 243 and 6.5 creedmoor were on the top of the list. I will stick with my 300 win mag.
