I put mine right in the shoulder this year. He was on top of the ravine. Had he ran at all it would have been down in the hole and that would not have been fun getting him out. As it was, he dropped about 20 yards from my food plot. Pretty easy drag. I did waste a lot of that one shoulder.

I used a Winchester .32 Special Model 94. Iron sights. I’ve used a Remington 7400 30-06 since 1994 but, I’m looking for a Remington 7600. They’re hard to come by.

Took a single shot .410 the first year I deer hunted. Nothing was taken.
The next year I took over dads 870 with a slug barrel and iron sites. I can remember killing maybe 4-5 deer with it. Been mostly a bow hunter ever since.
I received an original knight muzzleloader around 97 for a college graduation gift. I used it for gun season ever since but I do skip most gun seasons. Probably been 10-15 years since I killed a deer with it.
I did shoot my moms youth 870 20 gage last weekend. It has a scope and rifled barrel. It is so light it kicks like a mule but I was impressed how it shot. I will use it the next time I gun hunt just to have something belonging to my late mom.
I’ve never killed a deer with a rifle.

I had a Knight Muzzy from the same timeframe. It used those percussion caps or something like that. When the 209 primer muzzys came out, I got a stainless steel New England Firearms muzzy. Still ahve it. Great gun, and really small.

870 express magnum 12 ga, synthetic stock.Pretty bad choice for a 12 YO kid to use.
I've got expensive custom build magnum rifles for longer range stuff out west but I'll be shooting a 6mm for deer in MN this year. I see no reason to go any bigger than 243 for whitetails. If my daughters ever take up hunting and can use a rifle, they'll start with 223, 6 ARC, or 6.5 grendel sized cartridges which are all more than adequate for whitetails.
