Holy moly that’s pretty amazing. Be curious to keep your eyes on him to see what happens!

The kid said they were all standing right in front of our driveway trailcamera so maybe we'll have some pics of what happened.

that's crazy. Hopefully that buck survives, but it really could go either way. I bet that deer has a crazy rack next year if he survives.
Your young deer are larger than most of our old/large deer up here!

I very much hope he survives. I get year round pics of him but not on a real regular basis. Loosing an antler might help him survive rifle season so there's maybe a positive. He's already somewhat non-typical with 15 or so points on a 10pt frame. I kind of hope he doesn't change much unless it's to add a droptine (and get bigger). The break is rough, not smooth so I doubt brain is exposed but maybe it is?

Could end up like the bloody buck on my Reagan ranch thread.

Could end up like the bloody buck on my Reagan ranch thread. I really hope not! My neighbor and I have a goal of a 190 inch buck or two in the area. I could see this guy making that category someday, but not if this side goes wonky. I suppose it doesn't really matter, it is what it is.

From what I have read if a deer breaks his skull plate like the one you have, his chances of surviving are better the colder it is. The reason being if it is cold enough not to have flys and insects getting into the wound it will have a chance to heal.

Probably hadn't considered flies due to it being winter but that's something you want to think about when working cattle.
