Published in 1957.
From wiki
Atlas Shrugged is set in a dystopian United States at an unspecified time, in which the country has a "National Legislature" instead of Congress and a "Head of State" instead of a President. The US appears to be approaching an economic collapse, with widespread shortages, business failures, and decreased productivity.

You never know what's coming for the future. Lot's of predictions out there. Who ever would have thought that burgers, steaks and roast would be plant based. Oh wait back in 1973 the movie Soylent Green came out. Maybe the future holds this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

A newscast says a lot of energy is needed to power the lasers for this, but there is a positive net yield.
I suppose no one has figured the energy needed to mine/ procure the gold, hydrogen, and all the materials needed as well as waste disposal.
I tend to think that there are very few free rides on the energy front.
Remember the corn ethanol debates?

I worked for a testing lab in the 70's and we tested gasoline for lead content when we switched to oxengenated gas. Back then.....if you tested the roadsides and ditches.....there was a high lead content from spent fuels (I was told). Ever wonder where all the tire wear goes? Millions of tire treads just disintegrate?
