Ruttin, Let's see some photos oof your land of what you're talking about. Are these maple, oak, pine tops? I’m surprised at how few photos I have of tops etc. guess most of my cams were set away from these areas. If you look in the background here you can kind of see what I’m talking about. This isn’t the worst by any means. To be specific the property is 73% sugar maple, 14% red maple, 9% red oak, 5% yellow birch (DNR report). With a sprinkling of hemlock throughout. So, most of the tops are maple. Maple won’t last too long left in the woods after it falls or gets cut. It’ll usually get chalky and punky the next spring. If it were me I’d gather up some red oak, bur oak, white oak acorns and toss them in those brush piles and let them go. In 15 years they’ll be close to producing nuts. I can get you reds and whites next fall if you remind me. I don’t have any producing bur oaks though. I’d search out the red oak on your property and cut, girdle, or hack and squirt the competing trees around them. The maples will only provide for a week a year when the leaves drop in the fall. They have a sugar content in them for a few days after they drop. The oaks will respond really well to extra light.

I’d leave the tops. I never burn a brush pile. I like places for small and large critters to hide.
I’d also split with a maul for the exercise but I’m probably a little unusual.

I split with a maul and wedges for years for the exercise, then the wife got serious about heating with wood and my production no longer met demand.

One piece of advice.....is that when you do not know for CERTAIN what kind of machine you might want to buy......renting or using someone other's equipment may shed some light on what you want and need. That experience may guide your purchase.

A lot of good advice here. More thought and research.
