My neighbor is dropping trees to clear a spot for a shed. Deer started hitting the aspen tops within a day or two. He had a decent buck pic from a night or two ago. The deer also leveled his ninebark while they were there.

They are more grouped us this year than I can remember. Where there’s a pocket of deer, it’s several dozen in my area.

Walked my OTC farm today.. needed some exercise. Lots of deer hanging around . Couple factors
1.. my neighbor is putting out corn and deer pellets daily (12-15 deer in there every day)
2…the snow bent a bunch of smaller black Cherry trees and the leaves are right at deer 🦌 height ! Tracks everywhere! Nice to see.
*at least I think they are cherry ? DNR forester noted that in his report.

I can’t tell either. I don’t think my black cherry hold leaves in the winter.

I have a bunch of black cherry trees and none of them are holding leaves right now. The branch structure in your pictures seems similar to black cherry, but I'd need to see a close up of the bark to say for sure.

Black cherry here don’t hold their leaves in the winter. They’re actually one of the first to drop. Some oaks , beech, chestnuts, and some ironwood will hold leaves here.

I’m actually not sure either. I know it’s not ironwood!

Grab a few leaves the next time you’re out there. Also a closeup of the trunk or limbs.

I'd guess those holding leaves are American Hophornbeam aka Ironwood. They could be American Hornbeam (also aka as Ironwood)too, but they are much less prone to holding leaves IME

I’ve never seen so many large 12” ironwood in my life. I usually see them at 6” or so one here or there.
