I don’t know where this reply belongs, but wildlife is hurting.
I have one flowering crab left with fruit and the gobblers and later the hens hit it. There is very little left for deer and grouse. (At least I have lots of fruit spurs on other trees for the coming season).
I took a tour on snowshoes and the deer are eating the smaller corn stalks. I do see pheasants and turkeys out there at times, but I can’t see any corn. There might be just a bit under a big drift.
Outback, I noticed the deer were also eating cornstalks. They also had eaten all of the buds off of some small cottonwoods. I went back and got a trimmer. Cut off about 800 square feet of young cottonwoods up to about 2 inches in diameter. Maybe I can get a picture tomorrow.

Deer vacated my place a few snowfalls ago. Either that, or they're all dead. No tracks anywhere on my place for a couple weeks now. I did see a few fresh tracks coming off the north neighbor's places when I walked this morning, but nothing like it was a couple weeks ago. Deer have either found a food source (somebody is feeding), they're conserving calories by moving very little, or they're dead.

Any standing corn or fresh logging in your neighborhood that could be pulling them off your place?

Nope edit...I did hear from a guy about 2 miles north that the feed truck from Swanville co-op goes past his place to the Cargill corporate compound (they've since changed the "owner" on the plat map to a corporate officer I guess) once a week or so. I suppose they could be pulling every deer for a few miles if they're dumping tons of food.

Seen 15 deer walking around at noon two days ago. They didn't look great, and are not ever seen in those numbers at that time of day around here. It appeared they were trying to find something to browse on from the areas where the snow had melted back a bit. We/they need spring.

I counted 30 in the wind scoured portion of a wide open field a few miles from my place the other day in the middle of a bright, sunny afternoon. They were off in the distance so I couldn't tell much about their condition. But, if they are out in the wide open mid-day, in those numbers, I think they must be pretty hungry.

These three have been together on my new property all winter. I’m not sure what they’re eating because there’s little browse on my new property. The snow has dropped about 12” this week.

That looks good. I also try to drop undesirable trees in the winter when the deer can pick up some bonus calories. Killing two birds with one stone.
Are you looking to permanently kill off those cottonwoods or do you leave them intentionally for browse?

Are you looking to permanently kill off those cottonwoods or do you leave them intentionally for browse? It was part of a field that cottonwood seeds blew into. I just cut it back for browse and cover. The cottonwoods are getting thinner and I think this is the third time I have cut them back,
