A professor from Michigan submitted this commentary with some comments on the origin of CWD. Decades back I found a link to this Colorado study of deer being put in a pen that previously held scrapie sheep. Later the deer were released. I tried many times and could never find it again and I think that the link was suppressed. it seems to me that elk were next held in the pen and studied and some of those were released and somehow there was a movement to game farm elk.

Seems to me there should be a lesson learned from this and that is confining many wild animals to a penned area is unhealthy. CWD seems to follow the deer and elk farms and for some reason they seem too often have deer that escape into the wild herd.

Do the deer and elk farms that operate to sell venison contribute to the spread of CWD? My guess is way less.
Or is it only trophy farming that spreads CWD? My guess is most of it.
Without trophy farming how many deer and elk farms would exist? I don't think near as many.
How many trophy; cow, horse, goat, and chicken farms exist in the world? I've never seen one.

I guess I was thinking where people pay to shoot the animal not for the meat. A hunting trophy. Suppose it does happen with bison, and may be common in other parts of the world.

Texas is full of high fence operations with all kinds of critters raised to be shot as "trophies"

When first I saw the deer in a scrapie pen article, I’ve had one question. If CWD and scrapie are so similar, how are there any sheep left? Is scrapie always fatal?
I guess that’s two questions.

Google tells me scrapie is always fatal. I think the handwringing over CWD is largely blown out of proportion.

Google will also say CWD is always fatal. Not sure if that’s the case. It is certainly always fatal when more tags are issued or sharp shooters are hired.

There are strains of sheep with resistance. There has also been extensive testing by some breeders. The article does briefly mention this.

Texas is full of high fence operations with all kinds of critters raised to be shot as "trophies" and Texas has CWD. Good example.
