My old backyard hockey rink liner is past the point of repair. Was thinking I could section it off for weed mats. It’s 6mil white poly. Any reason that would be a problem?

Don’t make those mats too large. The soil needs to breathe, especially on lower/ wetter locations. Some plants may not tolerate the barrier. Willow cuttings will tolerate it. I also ran into problems on a dry year with mulch on top of an impervious barrier. Minimal rains and my watering never penetrated but just stayed in the mulch. I had to water under the plastic. Finally I just pulled it out.

I got the first round of trees in the ground yesterday. 250 White Spruce plugs from Itasca. Really good quality as always. I decided to give the rink liner recycling experiment a try. It is near the shed so I can check on how it’s doing easier and adjust accordingly. I decided to set aside the plugs that were on the small side and put them in a spruce garden by the shed. I can transplant the survivors in the future.

6s 1 year. The large majority were a 15-18” tree with a healthy plug.

That’s why I switched to ordering 6s from them because most of the plugs are squeezed down a bit in size the way they package them. The 6s shipped from them works perfect for my plug tool.

What size did you get before? I did hundreds about 10 years ago. I think most were 6s. I think the white pine were a larger product. The spruce were all 6s though and fit my plug tool perfectly.
