How much rain is enough for new trees? Gage has been showing a 1/2” per week. Not sure if I should supplement the new apple plantings.

Up here and at my old place 1/2" per week would have been just fine. If it's hitting the mid 80s frequently and your soil is on the lighter side, then you may need to supplementally water.

We have been running in the 70s most of the time. 10 day show nothing in the 80s. June will change that.

Large trees would obviously need more water to get re-established than smaller trees. Did you plant "typical" bareroot trees from someone like Turkey Creek, Fedco, Burnt Ridge, etc.? Or did you plant large potted or ball/burlap trees? One other thing I'd add is that if you aren't adding a TBS or 3 of Watersorb or similar to each planting hole, you may want to start doing so in the future. The stuff can make a difference when it gets hot and dry.

What stands out about it? I dont have one. Gotta try one of everything! You better get planting then. I haven't updated my list for a while, but I've got to have over 80 named varieties of apples now. Well maybe I just want to try one of a bunch of kinds. I am at 23 varieties at the cabin now. At the farm 12 different kinds, but I never documented what I planted so I really dont know what the hell is what. The farm ones just produce a lot of fruit so thats all that matters.

They got their 1 summer of babying. I have 10 bench grafts that I grafted and planted in their permanent home. Those are my main concern. I dipped the roots of each in gel before planting.

I haven’t watered an apple tree since 2012. They’re basically on their own these days.

Spruce success…maybe Spruce failure Damn things. Only have 6 or 7 that look good/ok. Out of 21. Have 25 white spruce coming from Iowa state nursery this week. And some root dip stuff. Dug 14 holes today to finish out my plot screen. Might pot a few. Give my sister a couple. If they don’t make it I’m only out $30 this time and not $300.

I am done planting and have been so for 2-3 weeks. Is anyone else finishing up? I have a couple potted apple trees I grafted last year that I still might plant this spring. Or not, I haven’t really decided. One more summer if babying them in a lot might be good for the trees. I like to plant them when they are 3-4’ tall so they only need to be caged for a couple years before I can pull the cages and use them on a new tree.
