White spruce from Iowa State nursery came today. Look like nice trees for $20. Can’t plant until Friday night so will probably put them in a bucket of soil tomorrow.

I should have done this right away but took the time yesterday to build shade walls for this years plugs that were out in the open. The willow cuttings are smoked, but the shade definitely helped. It’s damn dry so I gave this group a shot of water today as well. The rest I planted this spring are on their own.

You might be surprised with your willow cuttings. The roots likely couldn't grow fast enough to support those large tops, but you might have a new sprout coming from ground level.

When I did willow and HP cuttings, I would push 90 plus percent in the ground and snip them off with just one or two buds above ground. I also used black plastic in one occasion for willow cuttings.

I've had the best luck with cuttings by pushing as much underground as possible and then snip off the top about 2" above the ground. I typically did this in pots, but I also tried this with willows and red osier dogwood.
I did this about a decade ago at my cabin and earlier this spring, I "found" some of the ROD that I planted as cuttings and walked away from. Deer browse is keeping them stunted, but they are alive.

This year’s spruce plug plantings are looking pretty good despite the dry summer. I know a few on the higher ground burned up, but these were a block of 30 along the property line that are doing well. The shade walls I posted about above saved their ass I think.

I've only looked for a few dozen so far, but I'm finding a number of surviving white spruce plugs from this spring. I'm very surprised to be honest. All 10 of the apple plugs were toast by early August, even with lumite mats and watersorb added to the planting holes. I haven't looked around for any of the rugosa rose plugs yet.
