"Deer populations & goals Engage with us in 2023
Opportunities to help us shape deer population goals for 23 of Minnesota's 130 deer permit areas continue through Monday, Feb. 13, when the goal-setting questionnaire for this year will be closed.
Areas included in this final year of goal setting are the East Central Uplands block (DPAs 52, 155, 156, 157, 159, 172, 183, 221, 222, 225, 248, 249, 604) and the Sand Plain/Big Woods block (DPAs 219, 223, 224, 227, 229, 235, 236, 285, 338, 605).
Anyone who has an interest in deer management is invited to give feedback on deer population trends in the areas where they live, work and recreate.
...."

Barb Keller is quoted in Outdoor News in reference to the lower deer harvest ... she mentions weather and predators. Also she’s quoted as saying “We continue to see a slow decline in hunters across the state”
Well maybe figure it out? Too many seasons, terrible timing, too many tags… keep doing the same and more people will quit hunting Minnesota!

Maybe. I haven't found any dead deer yet, but with all the snow they could be buried out there. March and April are the real killer months though. There's no break in sight for March the last I looked. I told my wife tonight that it looks more like January 9th out there than March 9th

Talked to a guy today that found a dead pheasant by his shed. Looked like it died from weather he said.
Bad year for all wildlife!

What does it take to seriously depress the Turkey population? Shooting one gobbler per year does nothing, imo.

What does it take to seriously depress the Turkey population? Shooting one gobbler per year does nothing, imo. Turkeys struggle in deep snow without corn plots or bird feeders. I had good turkey numbers on my rusk county place, but the 2013 winter wiped them out. I bet it killed 95%+ of the birds. There are tons of bobcats up there too and I think they kill a bunch in the winter when they are grouped up We finally started seeing a few turkeys on my land again last year, so it has taken a long time to bounce back.

Exact opposite of what we are doing. Those are the exact things that depress our pheasant population as well.

If you go to Iowawhitetail there’s a good thread n eliminating predators to improve the pheasant and turkey populations. I have a friend that went to war with racoons and possums. Coyotes too ..
They killed hundreds off his big farm in Decatur County Iowa. Since then he said there’s pheasants, turkeys galore.

for things that depress the deer population, our neighbor is up to 17 coyotes. they see up to 6-7 most times they are out.
he said they just keep coming.

When the neighbor and I were walking a bit ago we heard some shots to the southeast. I figured the Swanville crew was out running coyotes. With fresh snow they'll drive the dirt roads looking for tracks, then cut the dogs loose.
