Didn't know where else to put it, so I'll put it here.
I know next to nothing about Navionic (or similar?) units for boats. I do know the folks who owned the resort we stayed at on the Ash River last year took us out on their boat for a long ride. They had a Navionic unit that pretty much guided him through narrows/reefs/obstructions/whatever. We were going through narrows you could throw a rock across at 30 mph. I would have putt putting through there in our boat.
Where does a person start looking for such a unit? Do you just buy chips for lakes/rivers/whatever?
Educate me please

My current graph is laughable. It's a $200 unit, basically an old school fish locator.
I want something that I can chart a course for navigating unknown waters. The one the owner had showed his location while also showing lake depth/obstacles/whatever. Do all Navionic/Lakemaster units do that?

Yes, they show all that.
For Navionics, here is a compatibilty chart with the different brands of graphs/navigation equipment...... Kind of a "busy" chart. FYI
